Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper, 53, is back home after spending over a year in intensive care after battling coronavirus. The married couple’s daughter Darcey, 15, and son Billy, 11, are said to be “thrilled” that medical experts have decided that he can return to the family home.

Derek is expected to receive care at the family’s newly adapted home.

However, Kate has been warned that he will continue to face a “long and gruelling” fight to get back to his full health.

The couple’s children are said to have been in tears of joy at the return of their dad, according to reports.

He will have round-the-clock care as he battles to overcome the devastating effects of Covid-19.

But he is said to now be regularly responding, and has been taken off all machines and breathing apparatus.

The family friend told The Sun: “The children, who have been so remarkably resilient, have been so, so happy to have their dad home.

“There have been a lot of happy tears from everyone.

“This past year has given Derek and Kate an absolutely unbreakable bond — she has been such a rock, and a total inspiration to everyone in Britain battling their own horror stories with the pernicious disease.”

They added that Kate’s access to visit her other half was limited due to Covid restrictions as well as Derek receiving wider therapy.

The friend added to the publication: “Derek is a unique case. The medical experts are now looking at unique ways to give Derek every chance of making the best recovery, and agree that being surrounded by his wife Kate and their two children, is vital to reaching that goal.

“The hope is that by boosting his mental health — which being surrounded by his loved ones clearly will do — Derek’s physical health will be significantly bolstered too.”

They added that Kate and her family are ready to begin a “whole new chapter” in their lives.

Last year, Kate revealed that Derek uttered his first words after being hospitalised in March.

The GMB host revealed that Derek mouthed the word “pain” as doctors manipulated his body to prevent him from seizing up.

Kate revealed she watched via video as she broke down in tears.

She commented at the time: “It’s a case of trying to balance belief, hope, optimism with reality.
