Leah Remini warns against falling for Scientologist Tom Cruise's 'movie star charm' amid 'Top Gun: Maverick' success, plus more news ICYMI

Cruise control

Tom Cruise is back on top in Hollywood due to the success of “Top Gun: Maverick.” However, an old friend-turned-enemy is warning people not to fall for Tom’s “charm.” After former Scientologist Claire Headley posted scathing words about Tom and the controversial religion he supports, Leah — who left Scientology in 2013 and has been an outspoken critic ever since — shared Claire’s message, adding, “Tom Cruise knows exactly what goes on in Scientology. Don’t let the movie star charm fool you.” Claire’s message that Leah backed didn’t mince words. “Personally, recent posts about [‘Top Gun’] only serve to remind me of Tom Cruise and his crimes against humanity,” she said. She went on to write, “Destroying families is a crime against humanity,” asking, “When is the last time Tom talked to his only biological daughter, Suri?” Claire also accused Tom of promoting “a dangerous cult that destroyed my family” and alleged it was “the same cult that forced me to have two abortions” and followed her “across state lines” when she escaped. She then vowed not to see Tom’s film or “support” him in any way. “Trust me, Tom Cruise knows exactly who he is supporting and the abuses the organization perpetrates,” she wrote. “I worked with him while I was there.”

Cancer diagnosis

Toby Keith is being treated for stomach cancer following a fall 2021 diagnosis. “I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover, and relax,” he wrote on Instagram on June 12. The country music singer canceled several concerts before revealing the diagnosis. “I am looking forward to spending this time with my family,” he wrote. “But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait.”

Lost and found

On June 13, Bam Margera was reported missing after he left a Florida rehab facility. Two days later, police and a crisis intervention team found him hiding out at a hotel in Delray Beach. Bam’s exit was rather stunning, as a court order required him to be at the treatment center. His departure was unauthorized (which is why police were involved in the search). According to reports, Bam, who seemed lucid before leaving, was upset that he wasn’t getting preferential treatment in rehab, at least when compared to previous stints in other facilities. He was cooperative with officials after being found.

Dress fiasco

Kim Kardashian is being accused of damaging Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy birthday, Mr. President” dress when she wore it to the Met Gala last month. Fervor grew throughout the week after an image purporting to show the dress torn and missing crystals emerged. However, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! — which bought the dress for $4.8 million in 2016 — backed Kim, telling TMZ that the dress has been damaged not by Kim but over time, as it’s a 60-year-old frock that’s been displayed countless times all over the world. “A report written on the dress’s condition in early 2017 states, ‘a number of the seams are pulled and worn. This is not surprising given how delicate the material is. There is puckering at the back by the hooks and eyes,’ among other instances of damage,” a Ripley’s rep said in a statement. Kim only wore the dress on the red carpet for a matter of minutes before changing into a replica. A Ripley’s executive added that from the time Kim put the dress on to the time she took it off, “The dress was in the same condition it started in.”

Boob scoop

Kyle Richards underwent breast reduction surgery three weeks ago, but she was able to keep the procedure secretive… that is, until Andy Cohen accidentally spilled the beans! While appearing on “Watch What Happens Live” on June 15, Kyle was asked about a necklace that nestled atop her décolletage. Andy then nonchalantly asked, “How’s the breast reduction working out?” The “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star shot back, “Oh thank you for letting everyone know, Andy.” The Bravo host was stunned, not realizing that Kyle’s surgery had not been publicly disclosed. After he apologized profusely for outing her surgery, Kyle fessed up, stating she had natural DD breasts and was over it. She said she told her doctor, “I want smaller boobs and I don’t ever want to wear a bra ever again in my life. And here I am.”

Still together?

So, BTS isn’t going on a “hiatus” after all? On June 14, fans of the K-pop group were devastated when a video shared by the band said the group was taking a “hiatus,” which, let’s be honest, usually leads to a breakup. In the video, the band spoke in Korean about their future, but the English translation for some of their comments called it a “hiatus.” However, HYBE, the music company that reps BTS, said things were simply lost in translation. “To be clear, they are not on hiatus but will take time to explore some solo projects at this time and remain active in various different formats,” a statement said. How big is BTS? Well, HYBE reportedly lost $1.7 billion in market value during stock trading after the “hiatus” chatter.

Big win

Jennifer Hudson has joined a very exclusive club: She’s an EGOT winner. J-Hud, who already had Emmy, Grammy and Oscar trophies on her mantle, took home the ever-elusive Tony on June 12 after “A Strange Loop” was crowned best musical at the 2022 Tony Awards. Jennifer is a producer on the Broadway show. “As I said when I won the Oscar, look what God can do. Well, he did it again,” she shared in an Instagram video after her win. “Thank u all for being with me on this journey. I could not live this life without u.”

Dad details

MSNBC anchor Katy Tur’s father is transgender. Zoey Tur — a pioneering helicopter pilot and journalist who famously captured the attack on Reginald Denny during the 1992 Los Angeles riots as well as O.J. Simpson’s Bronco chase on the 405 freeway in 1994 — came out as a trans woman in 2013. Now Katy is detailing her reaction to her father’s confession. “My dad said, ‘I am a woman.’ And I said, ‘What? And my dad said, ‘I’m a woman. I’m transitioning, I’m going to become a woman,'” Katy shared on “CBS Sunday Morning” on June 12 while discussing her new memoir, “Rough Draft.” “And I remember being at first puzzled and saying, ‘You gotta be joking. You’re kidding, what are you talking about?’ And my dad was adamant. ‘I’m the wrong person. I’m going to become the right person. Don’t you see? This is why I’ve been so angry.’ And it was really just, it was a lot.” Zoey, who is estranged from the journalist, admitted to to CBS that she’d been violent and had outbursts while raising Katy. “If it takes an act of public humiliation, in front of a camera, to make Katy feel better, and feel vindicated, so be it,” Zoey told CBS. “I’m happy to do that. I love her that much.”
