Liam Gatsbys TOWIE return in doubt as he faces two-month recovery after surgery

The Only Way Is Essex star Liam Gatsby’s future on the popular ITV show has been called into question after the reality star underwent a “life changing” surgery to improve his health.

The 33 year old recently underwent an operation to repair a hiatus hernia that had become so severe he was unable to eat or drink properly.

As a result of the surgery, he now faces a two month recovery period, which means he may not be fit enough to fly to the show’s exciting new series as the stars jet set off to the Dominican Republic.

Bosses at ITVBe had revealed that the latest series would be getting a tropical twist just last week, with the lucky stars being whisked off to a swish location in June for their first trip abroad in over two years.

However, not everyone is expected to be getting a seat on the plane. With the cast still being finalised, it is now feared that Liam’s ongoing recovery may not see him make the final cut.

The reality star shared a photo from his hospital bed on Friday after jetting back from LA to have treatment at The Holly Private Hospital in Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

He now remains on a liquid diet as his stomach recovers following the procedure.

In a post shared on Instagram, Liam said: "I would have still been in LA but the reason I came home was to have surgery.

" I’ve been suffering with a hiatus hernia & acid reflux for a few years now but it got to the point where I couldn’t eat food & drink liquids at the same time without it coming back up.

"Imagine eating a meal & being thirsty and not being able to drink a glass of water with it or the food you’ve just eaten will come back up.

"Also, the burning taste of acid in your mouth most mornings. This surgery repairing my stomach & hiatal hernia will hopefully be life changing for me .

"Not looking forward to the next 6 weeks on a liquid / soft food diet so any tips from people who have had this surgery it would be much appreciated x.”

Although it’s rare for people under the age of 50 to suffer from a hiatus hernia, the symptoms can be debilitating. The condition is caused when part of your stomach pushes up into your chest and can be both painful and impact on digestion.

Liam is expected to remain in hospital for up to three days before he is discharged to continue his recovery at home.

Ahead of the new series, a TOWIE spokesman confirmed that cast names for the show are not yet confirmed.

A source said: “TOWIE is coming back with a bang – and the cast are off to the Dominican Republic. It’s been months in the planning and all the details were signed off today.

“It is the most flash trip they’ve ever done – but given they’ve spent the last two years on home soil the bosses wanted to give the stars – and the fans – a treat.

“The cast are going to be flown out at the start of June but not everyone is going to get a ticket. It is by far the most exotic trip they have ever done and the sandy white beaches of the Caribbean island will make a beautiful backdrop for any drama that unfolds.

“From Puerto Banús to Punta Cana, this is a Marbella glow up of epic proportions. Those lucky enough to get a place on the plane are in for a treat.”
