Acknowledging the timing of the news is not ideal considering his wife Deidre just had a surgery to remove a tumor, the Cardinals star says this ‘isn’t something that just happened overnight.’
AceShowbiz – Albert Pujols and his wife Deidre are calling it quits after more than two decades together. The Major League Baseball legend is pulling the plug on their 22-year marriage, just days after Deidre underwent a brain surgery.
The 42-year-old, who has signed a one-year deal to return to the Cardinals for his farewell season, made public their split on Monday, April 4. “I’ve been asked a lot of questions over the past few days regarding what’s been going on at home and sadly, after 22 years of marriage, I have made the decision to file for divorce from my wife, Deidre,” he said in a statement released by his agent, Dan Lozano.
Albert acknowledged the timing of the news is not deal considering Deidre just had a surgery to remove a tumor last week, but he noted that this “isn’t something that just happened overnight.” He divulged, “I realize this is not the most opportune time with Opening Day approaching and other family events that have recently taken place. These situations are never easy and isn’t something that just happened overnight.”
“As a devout Christian, this is an outcome that I never wanted to see happen,” Albert continued in his statement. “For many long days and nights, I prayed, asking the Lord for His guidance.” He then vowed that he and Deidre would “remain committed” to raising their five children “in a loving and safe environment.”
“I am thankful for the five beautiful children that we brought into this world and remain committed to raising them in a loving and safe environment,” he said, before concluding his message, “I ask that you please respect our privacy and the privacy of our five children during this time.”
Albert and Deidre were married on New Year’s Day, January 1, in 2000. They raise five children, Isabella, whom Deidre shares with an ex, Albert Jr., Sophia, Ezra and Esther Grace.
On Tuesday, March 29, Deidre posted on social media that she was preparing for a surgery to remove a brain tumor. She later returned on Instagram to inform her followers that the surgery was successful.
“Despite the pain which was to (be) expected the surgery went well. 99% of the tumor was removed,” she wrote at the time. “The recovery journey begins… Thanks you all again for all the prayers and well wishes during this very challenging time.”
