Nicola Adams has revealed that she would love to return to Strictly Come Dancing after her time competing on the show was cut short last year.

The ex-boxer was forced to quit the hit BBC series after her professional dancer Katya Jones tested positive for coronavirus, forcing them both into self-isolation.

In a new interview with Lorraine Kelly on Wednesday, Nicola admitted that her departure was a "shame".

"I'm a fighter. I'd like to go out on my shield. I would [prefer] to go out on a dance-off than by Covid," she told the Scottish presenter.

When asked if she'd like to return to the programme, Nicola replied: "I'm not sure… I mean, I'd love to, just because of the way I went out.

"It wasn't fair," she added, as Lorraine agreed that Nicola has "unfinished business" on the dancefloor.

Nicole was left heartbroken after being booted off Strictly following Katya's coronavirus diagnosis.

The pair made history as the show's first same-sex couple, but Katya's positive test meant their time on the programme came to an abrupt and unexpected end.

At the time, it was revealed that Nicola would not be able to return to the show "in the future" as she could have an "unfair advantage".

A statement issued by the BBC at the time read: "We announced before the series started if anyone tested positive from Covid they'd be out of the competition.

"If someone has to miss a week, it's called a bye and everyone gets one bye. But contestants are not allowed to miss more than one week.

"They're not allowed to re-enter the competition after they've taken part in the first episode.

"Jamie (Laing) was allowed back because he was injured before he began training and appeared on the show.

"Nicola can't come back because she will have an unfair advantage in the future as she's now had weeks of training."
