Prince William’s Epic Reaction to His Favorite Soccer Team Winning Is the Meme That Keeps on Giving

The Duke of Cambridge is a sportsman at heart. On Monday, Prince William was in the audience at Wembley Stadium to watch his favorite English soccer team, Aston Villa, compete against Derby County.

William has been an ardent fan of the club since he was a school boy. In an interview with a BBC presenter, he explained that when he was younger, he “didn’t want to follow the run of the mill teams” like Chelsea and Manchester United, according to Birmingham Mail. And so, he stuck with Aston Villa ever since. “I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments,” he added.

Four years have passed since that interview, and that same “emotional rollercoaster” he described is still real based on William’s epic reactions throughout yesterday’s critical game.

When one of the players on William’s team became injured, a staffer at The Daily Mirror uploaded a picture on Twitter of a TV screen which showed the prince looking visibly upset with his hands on his face. “Prince William, Duke of Cambridge during injury time of Aston Villa v Derby County at Wembley Stadium,” Michael Rye tweeted.

ESPN uploaded a Twitter video of William’s reaction after his team won, showing the prince cheering in the VIP box with retired Aston Villa player John Carew. William went in for a big hug as the two friends smiled hard, jumped up and down, and threw their hands in the air while celebrating the big win.

The high-stakes matchup was an important victory for Aston Villa because it meant that the club will return to the Premier League, which is considered the top level in the English football system. Given the importance of the game, it makes sense why William’s reactions were so intense and gripping. Here’s to hoping we get more hilarious reactions from the prince once his team plays against the Minnesota United FC in July.
