Rep. Eric Swalwell Denies Farting on Live TV After Clip Goes Viral

Today in “I can’t believe this just happened” California Rep. Eric Swalwell is denying farting on TV. A sentence I never thought I’d write, but here we are! The incident in question went down during Monday’s episode of Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC, when Swalwell was casually trying to talk about allegations that President Donald Trump used taxpayer dollars to cheat in the 2016 election.

Unfortunately, his musings were interrupted by what can only be described as a very loud farting noise, which conspiracy theorists claim a) he is responsible for, and b) he reacted to by stifling a smile while talking.

In the clip Swalwell says “Chris, so far the evidence is uncontradicted that the president used taxpayer dollars to ask the Ukrainians to help him cheat—” at which point the farting noise can be heard. He then finishes his sentence with a slight smile, continuing “—an election. And the complaint that I’ve heard from Republicans….”

We flipped it back several times, you can see the laugh in his eyes

It is real you can tell the pause he takes to push it out

For what it’s worth, Hardball claims it was a cup moving across the desk, and they’re using the opportunity to sell merch (classic).

Sorry to disappoint the conspiracy theorists – it was the #hardball mug scraping across the desk. Get yours today and let’s get back to the news! https://t.co/SG8Owm2IBw

And FYI, Buzzfeed reporter Addy Baird ended up texting Swalwell to get the inside story, and he wrote back “It was not me!!!!!” and “Ha. And I didn’t hear it when I was speaking.”
