Ahead of the drop for her highly anticipated album, Selena Gomez talked mental health, therapy, and medication in a new interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine. She described how she transformed her life by committing to working on herself and recognizing what exactly she struggled with.
“I had low self-esteem, and that’s something I work on continuously,” she said, via People. “But I feel so empowered because I’ve gained so much knowledge about what was going on mentally. My highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time.”
After seeking professional help and treatment, Gomez said she found clarity.
“I found out I do suffer from mental health issues. And, honestly, that was such a relief,” the “Lose You to Love Me” singer said. “I realized that there was a way to get help and to find people that you trust. I got on the right medication, and my life has been completely changed.”
Getting support from friends, like fellow singer Taylor Swift, also helped her through her journey. “I remember Taylor said when I played her some of the new songs, ‘I feel like I’m seeing who you were before this,'” she said. “That makes me happy. I like feeling like that girl again.”
Gomez has received plenty of media attention since her 2018 breakup with Justin Bieber, and his subsequent engagement and marriage to Hailey Baldwin.
Gomez previously spoke about the first single she dropped for her new album, which comes out this Friday. When she first released “Lose You to Love Me,” many speculated it was a cathartic melody about her relationship with Bieber. And though she didn’t mention her ex by name, she all but confirmed the speculations during a guest appearance for radio show On Air with Ryan Seacrest.
“I mean it’s all the feelings, right? It’s everything from happy and emotional to just realizing it and being frustrated,” she said. “I just wanted to validate all of those feelings because they were extremely real to me.”
