Strictly Come Dancing star Maisie Smith has responded to being labelled “cocky” and “arrogant” on the show.
The 19 year old EastEnders actress, who recently revealed she secretly broke down in tears on Strictly, has insisted she isn’t “confident in herself at all”.
Maisie revealed to Mirror Online that in fact, she is actually very shy.
EastEnders star Maisie, who plays Tiffany Butcher on the soap, explained: “People forget I am a 19-year-old girl. I’d ask people maybe not to judge my character on certain faces I pull when I’m dancing and maybe don’t be too quick to guess who someone is.

“I’m not confident in myself at all and I’m trying to be more confident, let’s not hate.
“When I was asked to do Strictly, as much as I was so excited, part of me thought it wasn’t the best idea for me because I’m too shy. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve put on a confident front to cover up my nerves and maybe that came across in a different light than what I intended.
“I wish I was that confident person – that’s the most amazing thing for someone so young to have confidence and that’s what I strive for.
“I do find it quite crazy that people would use that against someone.“
Maisie, who recently revealed her biggest fear, continued: “The person I am, I’ve struggled to bring that across when I’m under pressure on live TV. I can sometimes put this face on, for example, if I’m nervous I’ll just stay quiet. You can’t do that on Strictly so I try to find this confident, bubbly person and I think it does get misconstrued as arrogance.
“I think sometimes, with young girls in particular, maybe people don’t like to see such a confident, outgoing young girl. Maybe someone a bit older or a boy might get looked at differently.”
It comes after Maisie broke down in tears as she discussed how cruel people and mean comments affect her.

In an exclusive interview with OK! magazine earlier this week, Maisie admitted: “People have said they can’t warm to me on Strictly, but I’m so nervous and that can be misinterpreted as arrogance because I’ll either go quiet, or I’ll go over the top to put on a confident front.
“It’s hard to not let it affect you. I do have to genuinely remind myself to just trust myself. And be me. I won’t sit here and say I don’t care what people say about me, I’m a human being after all and I do.”
Maisie added how she feels the negativity is “certainly not one of the perks of being in the public eye” but said she is getting used to it.
She explained: “I’m definitely better than I used to be. I’ve grown to accept that people will say mean things.
“It’s a part of life. I’m just trying to grow and learn but people are cruel,“ Maisie became tearful as she continued: “When you see things about you in the media and it changes people’s perceptions of you, you have to work extra hard to prove you are a nice person. People make mistakes. I’m just a young girl and I’m always learning.”
