Yazmin Oukhellou is “trying to find a way to piece her life back together” as she returned home last week following a horror car crash in Turkey that left killed pal Jake McLean.
Wearing dark sunglasses, the TOWIE star, 28, was seen with her right arm in a cast and a sling as she was joined by her mum Lisa – who stayed by her side after she underwent surgery for extensive injuries. Other snaps showed Yazmin being consoled by family members.
A source has told OK!, “Yazmin is back home in Essex and is trying to find a way to piece her life back together. She is still recovering from her injuries as well as trying to process everything. She is taking each day as it comes and has the support of her family who are helping her through this awful time.”
Yazmin was travelling as the passenger in the car with Jake, 33, in Bodrum, south-west Turkey, when the crash happened at around 4.30am on Sunday 3 July. It’s been reported that the vehicle careered 70ft over a cliff bend and landed in a ravine 30ft below.
An official told reporters that Jake is estimated to have been driving at “well over” the 40mph speed limit. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, while Yazmin was taken to hospital. Doctors reportedly told her she was “very lucky” to have survived.
Yazmin opened up to The Sun about the horror crash at the weekend revealing that she had to "snap her own arm" to try save her and Jake.
"It was lay there and bleed to death, or snap my own arm to try to save us," she said.
Recalling the crash, Yazmin went on: "We were just tumbling for what seemed like forever. It felt like I was going round in a washing machine — just round and round.
“Then eventually it stopped and my right arm was jammed.
“The car was upside down. It had an open sunroof and my right arm was just stuck behind my back and under the folded back of the car roof.
“I tried to honk the horn with my foot and I couldn’t do.”
She then tried to wake up Jake – whom she thought was just unconscious – with the 28 year old saying she "didn’t want to admit it to myself that he could be dead".
Yazmin added that doctors have called her "a miracle" and told her she wouldn't have survived the crash if she wasn't asleep.
“I severed an artery and a nerve, that’s why I bled so much. The doctors called me an angel, a miracle, because it’s a notorious spot and people have never survived," she said. "Now I’m just wondering how the hell did my partner die while I’ve survived? It’s made me look at life totally differently.
"Now I know that if I wasn’t asleep I probably wouldn’t have survived because the doctor said that meant my body was more relaxed."
As Yazmin comes to terms with what she’s been through, grief coach Dipti Solanki tells OK! it’s important that she allows herself to feel her emotions.
“Yazmin is likely to be experiencing lots of things on many different levels, such as PTSD and trauma,” Dipti explains. “She needs to be surrounded by good people who can help her process the different emotions she may be feeling such as grief.
“She could be going for a walk or making a cup of tea and she might start to relive it. But she needs to not push down her emotions – we are told to ‘be strong’ but she should be able to just express how she feels.”
Yazmin had an on-off relationship with Jake since 2019 following her split from James Lock. Following a brief fling, it’s believed they reunited in May last year before she confirmed their romance in December. However, the couple separated just a month later. Yazmin and Jake were still thought to be split up at the time of the crash.
Last week, we revealed how Yazmin’s TOWIE co-stars were ‘united in support’ of the star.
“The whole TOWIE cast are in disbelief. Yaz was meant to be coming back to the show,” we were told. “The cast are sending their support and they will be around her when she’s home. They just want her home. You never expect something like this to happen. It just makes you realise you never know what is going to happen in life.”
