Tik Tok has become a social media app amongst hefty competitors like Twitter and Instagram however, it has separated itself by simply making people dance. The app has in fact, helped a number of artist jumpstart their career with viral challenges that coordinate with the music and eventually end up leaving Tik Tok and infiltrating outside apps. From the #SavageChallenge to the #BussItChallenge, there has been great success in securing a hit on Tik Tok, and it can even get some artist to chart on Billboard.
“My label is happy, my fans are happy and the world is starting to know me for me and who I am as an artist,” Coi Leray tells ESSENCE in a video interview below. “It feels like I am getting closer to being a major… superstar.” The 23-year-old’s song, “No More Parties” was released at the end of January and quickly began to circulate on Tik Tok and radio stations. Shortly after, a feature from Lil Durk was introduced in March debuting the track at No. 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 which is and currently sits at No.26. This is not the only song that has all eyes on Coi, at the end of March, she released a joint track with buzzing rapper Pooh Shiesty titled “Big Prdd” that has began to go viral prior to its release.
It’s not hard for Coi herself to go viral. From funny videos posted on her Instagram to her cooking show on Youtube, to championing her body against internet trolls, she lets ESSENCE know that this has always been who she is. “It feels good that I… have so much for people to look at, I love content,” she concluded.
