‘I can’t cope!’ Britons go wild for new John Lewis Christmas jumper – sold out in hours

In the advert, Nathan introduces himself to Skye, an alien who crashes into a forest somewhere in Britain. Although Nathan shows Skye an array of British Christmas traditions, including mince pies and Christmas trees, the 14-year-old boy’s jumper is what steals the show.

Featuring a Christmas tree with a star that lights up, Nathan’s jumper was on sale on the John Lewis website at the same time as the advert launched this morning.

The jumpers are the same except for the fact that the one on sale does not light up.

The Christmas tree is dark and light green with trimmings and a gold star.

The jumper also has green sleeves and a red neckline and cuffs.

Costing £29 for men and women, the jumper has already sold out in adult sizes.

All sizes, except for the children’s models, sold out in mere hours.

Children’s sizes are still available on the John Lewis website and cost £14 to £18.

The jumper’s description on the website reads: “Although this jumper doesn’t light up like Nathan’s in our Christmas advert, we’ve designed it with gold thread embroidery to bring a little sparkle to the star on top of the knitted Christmas tree.”

John Lewis said it will be donating 10 percent of the profits from each jumper sold to its Give a Little Love charities FareShare and Home-Start UK.

Speaking about this year’s advert Claire Pointon, Director of Customer at John Lewis, said: “There is nothing more magical than discovering the joy of Christmas for the first time and enjoying your favourite festive moments with loved ones.

“After the last 18 months, we wanted our advert to really celebrate this as we look forward to a brighter future.

“Through the story of Skye and Nathan, we celebrate friendship and are reminded of the joy of experiencing Christmas for the first time.”

As soon as Britons watched the advert this morning, many took to social media to express their opinions on the jumper, as well as the film itself.

Twitter user Emma Lewis wrote: “Oh John Lewis. The kiss, the ending, the jumper. I just can’t cope! Talented actors and a lovely story. Also the tune.”

Nicola Kemp commented: “Love this, love the soundtrack, love the emotion, love the festive jumper. Is it too early for mince pies.”

Becky Harris Cowley said: “Christmas trees, Christmas decorations, Christmas jumper, mince pies, snow, how much Christmas do you want?”

Twitter user @TULIPSUH simply wrote: “John Lewis ad it’s officially Christmas!”

However, some Britons were not as impressed with the advert.

Social media Dot said: “Another really disappointing ad. Not Christmassy or upbeat at all. Just a jumper ad – John Lewis ads are not what they used to be.”

Helen Maria agreed. She wrote: “It’s boring. Also advertising a fun light up jumper but not selling it. Your adverts used to be brilliant. Even M&S food advert beats you this year.”
