Boston Red Sox baseball star David Ortiz shot in the Dominican Republic restaurant as he begs medics 'please don't let me die'

BASEBALL legend David Ortiz begged medics "please don't let me die" after being shot in a restaurant in the Dominican Republic, his dad said.

The ex-Boston Red Sox slugger, 43, was wounded at a popular night spot in capital Santo Domingo on Sunday night, his father told ESPN.

The three-time World Series champion, nicknamed "Big Papi", was rushed into emergency surgery and is now in a stable condition.

An investigation has been launched after officials claimed a motorcyclist shot Ortiz at point blank range as he ate at the Dial Bar and Lounge on Sunday.

Local media reported a man was arrested after witnesses rushed to stop him escaping the scene.

Video footage shows fellow diners frantically fleeing the scene as the shooting unfolded.

Journalist Dionisio Soldevila reported that Ortiz begged "please don't let me die, I'm a good man" as he arrived at hospital.

He has reportedly not suffered any serious injuries to his organs and is expected to recover.

His father Leo Oritz told ESPN: "They called to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical centre, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred.

"At the moment, everything is confusing. I'm trying to find out where they took my son."

According to a report from Dominican TV station CDN 37, Ortiz was shot in the leg.

Ortiz has been flooded with well-wishes after the shooting, with fellow baseball star Alex Rodriguez tweeting: "Anxiously waiting for more news. In the meantime, only prayers for @davidortiz, Tiffany and their family."

The 43-year-old, who was born in Santo Domingo, played in the MLB for 20 seasons but was best known for the 14 years he spent in Boston.

The 10-time All-Star led the Red Sox to three World Series titles in 2004, 2007 and in 2013 before he retired after the 2016 season.

I wasnt gonna comment on this episode but someone outta nowhere once again try to diminish my image just to sell a couple books…jus for some $$ in his pocket. MLB do a hell of a job letting us know as a player the importance of NOT betting on baseball…especially after pete rose. I have been a player that has been extremely blessed…not only with the love of the fans, but also with lots of $$$. And im SMART ENOUGH to not get caught in some BS like that….trust me!!! im doing this NOT because of u who wrote the book, im doin this for my fans to have peace of mind, cuz y’all deserve that. if i had been involved in anything related to gambling in 2005, my career wouldn’t have ended in 2016….MLB woulda gotten rid of me ASAP, cuz MLB don’t play that!!!! Ill leave this here…remember, you knock me down 10 time, I’ll learn how to get up 11. TRUST. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
