Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton will miss this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19.
Hamilton, who appeared drained at the end of last weekend’s race which saw Romain Grosjean suffer burns to his hands and ankles after his car burst into flames in the opening lap, had three negative results throughout last week, with the fourth returning the positive shortly after the race.
With the 35-year-old now missing Sunday’s penultimate race, it means he’s unable to match Sebastian Vettel’s 2013 record of 13 wins in one season. For now, he also misses out of being able to clinch a 100th pole position, his record-extending 98th came last weekend.
Mercedes is set to announce a replacement driver latest this week, while Hamilton needs a negative test before potentially returning for the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
