Michael Smith defends Fallon Sherrock decision as darts fume over Worlds spot

Grand Slam of Darts champion Michael Smith has backed Fallon Sherrock to bring “excitement” to the upcoming World Championship, despite the controversy surrounding her place at the tournament.

Sherrock appeared to have missed out on a spot at the Worlds after being pipped to the all-important second spot in the Women’s Series by emerging star Beau Greaves.

Greaves missed the first 12 events but then won the final eight to finish behind Lisa Ashton in the Order of Merit, edging out Sherrock, who missed some events herself due to her involvement in the World Series of Darts.

With the tournament less than a month away, it looked as though Sherrock had missed out, only for the PDC to move the goalposts by creating a spot for the winner of the inaugural Women’s World Matchplay. Sherrock won that tournament back in July and has therefore landed a place at the Worlds.

The move has provoked criticism from many fans on social media but Smith, who secured his maiden major title at the Grand Slam on Sunday, believes it is a positive move.

“It is good. I know there’s a bit of controversy around it but Fallon brings excitement to Worlds,” Bully Boy told Sky Sports.

“She brings a lot of attention with the media and people tuning in to watch. It’s going to be a fantastic year, you’ve got Fallon, Lisa and Beau Greaves, who is one of the best women darts players around at the minute, so everyone’s trying to avoid her in the draw.

“It’ll be fun. Hopefully the girls miss each other in the draw. Hopefully there’s a few upsets and we’ll see. As long as it gets the attention and everyone tunes in to watch the darts, we’re all happy.”

The draw for the World Championship will take place next Monday, November 28.
