Bill, 55, and Oti Mabuse, 30, have become the front-runners to win this year’s season of Strictly Come Dancing next month. The pair have impressed the judges and viewers at home with their stellar routines so far. With just a few weeks to go until the final of the BBC dance show, it seems the comedic musician is getting on the professional dancer’s nerves as the reigning champion has joked the contestant does like to take his time when taking breaks from rehearsals.

Appearing on Friday’s edition of Morning Live ahead of week six of the competition, the pair discussed their backstage antics.

It was former contestant Gethin Jones, 42, who initiated the discussion by explaining how he coped whilst taking part in the show.

“When I was on the show when it was black and white many years ago, if I got a break from training, I would really take my time.

“A little bird tells me Oti, Bill likes a break. Is that right?” he asked the professional dancer to which she was seen laughing on camera.

“Honestly, he does this thing [all the time] of making tea but it’s not the tea that’s the problem. It’s how long it takes,” she replied.

“He’ll walk the longest route [to have a sip] of tea and I say, ‘Look, it’s just here,’ and he’ll just walk around,” Oti continued.

Bill defended himself as he explained: “You can’t rush a cup of tea, am I right, Gethin?” he asked as his professional partner chuckled away in the background.

“I agree. Make the most of it Bill, make the most of the rest that you need,” the former contestant told the front-runner.

This weekend, the pair will be taking on the Jive to ‘One Way or Another’ by Blondie but viewers have already seen the comedic musician take on an energetic performance.

You can’t rush

Bill Bailey

According to the latest odds from Coral bookmakers, Bill is the host favourite to become champion, meaning Oti could secure her second consecutive win.

They currently stand at 4/6 to land victory with their closet competitor being chart-topper HRVY, 21, whose chances of glory stand at 4/1.

Spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said: “Just seven celebrities remain on Strictly 2020 and there’s a clear favourite for the Glitterball Trophy.

“We make Bill Bailey odds on to be crowned the winner of this series,” he added, but can he really go all the way?

However, on the other end of the spectrum, it seems television presenter JJ Chalmers, 33, could be the next celebrity to be eliminated.

At the moment, the former Royal Marine’s chances of winning stand at 100/1, making him the clear outsider.

“JJ Chalmers is definitely the favourite to be next to leave as his run on the dance-floor draws to a close,” Aitkenhead added.

Also in the danger zone is Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing, 31, whose chances of victory are 20/1 despite his routines going down a storm with the judges.

It seems Bill has been making the most of his experience in the competition and remains modest about his chances at winning.

“It’s extraordinary. People would assume I wouldn’t be able to even keep up with the training.

“But I’ve surprised myself,” the comedic musician explained.

“I do a routine, watch it back and think: what happened there? I can’t quite believe I’m able to do it,” Oti’s partner told The Guardian.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 7:15pm on BBC One.
