Loved ones of Dame Barbara Windsor have gathered to say goodbye to the EastEnders and Carry On legend at her London funeral.
Her co-star Ross Kemp – who played Pegyy Mitchell’s son Grant – led the way to pay tribute, alongside Barbara’s good friends Christopher Biggins and Little Britain double act Matt Lucas and David Walliams.
The funeral cortege has arrived at Golders Green Crematorium. A group of three cars carrying large floral tributes to Dame Barbara pulled into the venue.
A red and white display spelling the words ‘Babs’, ‘The Dame’ and ‘Saucy’ was on show in the car bearing the actress’s coffin.
The acting legend, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2014, died last year at a London care home, her husband Scott Mitchell confirmed to PA.
In a statement, Scott said: ‘Her passing was from Alzheimer’s dementia and Barbara eventually died peacefully and I spent the last seven days by her side.
‘Myself, her family and friends will remember Barbara with love, a smile and affection for the many years of her love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives and the entertainment she gave to so many thousands of others during her career.’
He continued: ‘Barbara’s final weeks were typical of how she lived her life. Full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit until the end.
‘It was not the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserve. I will always be immensely proud of Barbara’s courage, dignity and generosity dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as she could.’
