Season nine of Death in Paradise saw the departure of DI Jack Mooney (played by Ardal O’Hanlon) as he jetted back to London with daughter Siobhan Mooney (Grace Stone). His position at the police force was taken over by DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little) who wasn’t initially keen on staying. However, after getting to know his colleagues and spending his evenings drinking on the beach, Neville opted to stay on the island for the foreseeable future.

Why isn’t Death in Paradise season 9 on Netflix?

Death in Paradise usually starts airing its series in January and this year was no different.

After many investigations and a big decision made by DI Mooney, the season came to an end at the end of February.

Once the final episode was shown on BBC One, the full series became available to watch on the channel’s BBC iPlayer.

Unfortunately for Netflix fans, the latest series has not been released on the streaming service.

  • Death in Paradise fans distracted by evidence blunder in series 6

For UK Netflix subscribers, only the first seven series are available to watch.

So neither seasons eight or nine can be viewed via the streaming platform.

While there has been no official confirmation as to why the latest series has not yet been dropped on Netflix, it could have something to do with the introduction of Britbox.

This is a streaming service filled with British content from both BBC and ITV which has proved a success in the US.

Britbox may have only become available for UK residents since late last year, it has been in America for the past three years.

Death in Paradise is no longer available to watch on Netflix US after it was taken off the platform in August 2019.

However, the first eight seasons of the BBC One series then became ready to watch on Britbox instead for both UK and US fans to watch.

Even though season nine has not yet been released on Britbox, it does now seem likely it will be added to the streaming service’s latest content following the addition of series eight.

So the most likely reason for Death in Paradise season nine not being available to watch on Netflix is because it will be on Britbox instead.

There has been no confirmation on if the first seven series are going to be removed from the UK streaming service.

But as this did happen in the US, there is a possibility it could be heading that way.

Britbox is now available to purchase both in the UK and the US.

  • Death in Paradise theory: Are all of the detectives dead?

The streaming service costs £5.99 per month and gives first time subscribers a 30-day free trial.

This means you can view Britbox content for free for a month but when this time period is up, monthly payments will begin unless you unsubscribe.

Similarly to Netflix, Britbox does have an app so you can also watch some of your favourite shows on your phone, laptop or tablet.

Death in Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
