EastEnders' cafe goes meat-free

EastEnders’ signature cafe is reportedly set to go meat-free.

The BBC One soap is said to have hired an ‘eco consultant’ in an effort to go greener on the set.

As a result, the iconic cafe — which is currently owned and run by Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) — will replace bacon and sausages with Quorn alternatives.

A source close to the serial drama told The Sun newspaper: ‘When Ian Beale tucks into a full English at the caff, not a rind of bacon passes his lips.

‘Instead, all food now shown on air is vegetarian. This means Quorn sausages and bacon, and some sort of kidney bean concoction for black pudding.’

‘Like everyone these days, EastEnders’ bosses want to do their bit for the environment and this is all part of a massive ongoing drive to reduce carbon emissions.

‘It means less food is wasted as veggie or vegan items can be re-heated – and obviously pigs, cows and sheep aren’t being slaughtered.’

As noted earlier, the cafe I currently owned and run by Kathy, but son Ian (Adam Woodyatt) — who previously owned the business after he bought if from Sue and Ali Osman (Sandy Ratcliffe and Nejdet Salih) back in the 1980s — recently remortgaged the cafe behind his mum’s back!

Viewers will know that the businessman is currently in financial difficulty after he used Max Branning’s (Jake Wood) money to purchase The Queen Vic for Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean).

EastEnders continues Thursday October 15 at 7:35pm on BBC One.
