Zack Morris and Maisie Smith denied any romance rumours earlier this year after they were spotted getting close and as the EastEnders cast get back to filming they've spoken about how it's different.

The 21 year old actor, who plays newly married teen Keegan Bake alongside onscreen wife Tiffany Butcher on the long running BBC soap, said that they have "become close" because of the nature of their job.

But it's nothing more than just friendship for the duo, who have had to adjust to new filming rules on set following the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking ahead of his episode of EastEnders: Secrets from the Square where he will be appearing alongside Maisie and Keegan's onscreen mum Karen, Lorraine Stanley next week, for a triple helping to relive their biggest storylines and tease what is to come.

Speaking of how he gets on working with Maisie: "Yeah we get on really well. We film all this stuff together, we’re always on set together, our storylines now more than ever revolve around each other.

"You’re going to become close with your co-stars. She’s got a cool work ethic, so we click on that level as well. It’s always good to get on with your co-star. We get along and have a laugh."

Maisie, who plays one half of the newly married couple, insisted back in February they were “just friends” after a source tipped a “blossoming romance” between the pair.

Maisie said: “I film most of my scenes with Zack, naturally we've built a great friendship. Nothing but mates.”

And Zack added: “The majority of our filming days are spent together so we have grown closer as friends but nothing more than that.”

The actor’s characters Tiffany and Keegan fled to Scotland to tie the knot in November last year in the soap.

Originally the couple didn’t have the support of their families, who chased them up to Scotland to stop the nuptials. But, once Keegan’s mum Karen Taylor and Tiffany’s aunt Sonia Fowler confront them at the registry office, they were persuaded to support the couple.

After the small wedding ceremony, the couple moved into the flat below Karen’s, which is owned by the council and letted to Ted Murray, who left Albert Square last year.

The newly weds have already faced a number of hurdles in their marriage, including being quizzed by the council about living in the flat and Keegan struggling with being stopped by the police on a number of occasions while he tries to make his way in the business world.

And now after months apart due to lockdown the pair have to get used to how to manage their roles with social distancing.

"Obviously it’s different. But like everything you just have to adjust and especially given the circumstances, no one expected it to happen, so the fact that is has we’re all kind of going through it together.

"It’s not something that’s happened before, this is a new thing for everyone. And it’s the first time it’s been different so even someone who has been there from day 1 is still learning. I like learning though so it’s been cool."
