Cain (played by Jeff Hordley) has been enjoying married life with Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb) after the pair finally put their past behind them last year. They have both cheated on each other before, with Moira’s most recent affair being with her husband’s long-lost son, Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). However, the Emmerdale bad boy could be developing feelings for another villager and although he wants to make his marriage work, he could find the temptation too hard to resist on the ITV soap.

Over the past couple of months, Cain has struck up an unlikely friendship with Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) and even fans were baffled by the pairing as they are polar opposites.

However, following the death of Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger) earlier this year, the mechanic proved to be a huge source of support to the grieving father of one.

The doctor was overcome by the sense of his loss and almost lost his grip on reality but it was the village bad boy who helped to bring him back.

Unfortunately, the two men ended up falling out earlier this month when the mechanic failed to turn up to support his friend, who had just opened a wellbeing allotment.

This was a homage to his daughter’s memory and he was hoping all of those closest to him would have been able to make his big day.

With Cain absent from proceedings, Liam was less than impressed and the two men haven’t spoken to each other for a couple of weeks.

Having had enough of the silent treatment, Cain will embark on a quest to re-establish his friendship during next week’s episodes.

The mechanic will turn up at his friend’s house and tell him how sorry he is for not showing at the opening of the well-being allotment.

He will attempt to make amends for the hurt he has caused but it will be up to the doctor to decide whether he can forgive him or not.

This could be the moment where Cain confesses his love for Liam and tells him he wants them to embark on an affair.

Definitely going to be bumps

Liam could be confused by what his friend is saying at first, given he is married to Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi).

As he starts to think more about it, however, he could begin to see where Cain is coming from as there seems to be some chemistry.

Neither of them has ever shown interest in being with a man romantically before but this doesn’t mean the idea has been shut down altogether.

Clearly harbouring feelings for one another, will the men agree to keep their affair on the down-low so they can enjoy some time together?

If their wives were to find out what they were up to, they would be least heartbroken by the unforgivable betrayal.

Having taken Cain back time and time again, this could be the final straw for Moira who issues her husband with a divorce.

Leyla could be less eager to end things as she could sit down with Liam to understand why he turned to Cain for comfort.

She could worry this is all to do with his grief and not his actual feelings but she could be left devastated if the doctor confesses his love for the mechanic.

This could bring an end to their marriage but with everything out in the open, could the two men start a relationship or was it only ever meant to be an affair?

Cain would not be the first member of the Dingle family to be a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Not only is his nephew Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) gay but his daughter, Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) is bisexual.

As is her mother and Cain’s former lover, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), who has had relationships with both men and women in the past.

But will Cain be able to accept his sexuality or will he try to tell his family he is not a part of the community despite having an affair with Liam?

Speaking last year after Cain and Moira reunited, the actress who plays the latter, Natalie, explained the future was not going to be easy for the pair.

Talking to Express.co.uk and other publications, she said: “There’s definitely going to be bumps on the way.

“I don’t think it’s going to be plain sailing.”

Natalie added in the interview: “In the scenes we’ve been filming, there’s a bit of bickering going on between Moira and Cain!

“But it’s good because the sense of the relationship is still there and you slip back to the way they were as a couple, which is the strength that they have.”

The actress didn’t want the couple to reunite at all in the beginning as she explained: “To be honest, it doesn’t feel that long, it was only [2019].

“It was all still uncomfortable and it was awkward. She didn’t know it was his son [who she slept with], but she did what she did. They could have kept it going for a while,” she told Metro.co.uk.

But will she get her wish as Cain and Liam explore their chemistry?

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode airing on Thursdays at 8pm.
