ITV viewers were left on the edge of their seats when Jamie Tate’s (Alexander Lincoln) car careered off the road and plunged into a lake – but is he really dead? Could his mother Kim (Claire King), the master of fake deaths, be in on Jamie’s secret that he staged his own death in order to escape Emmerdale?
In Friday’s episode of the soap, Kim told a concerned Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) that Jamie is not in love with her.
Kim explained: “Let me paint a picture for you and this wonderful future you have planned. He loves Dawn [Taylor] (Olivia Bromley), you were just the consolation prize. Actually, scratch that, you’re not even that.”
An angered Gabby replied: “And you wonder why he hates you. You couldn’t even bring yourself to wish him a happy birthday this morning.”
Kim, who disowned her troubled son, added: “For what it’s worth, I am not sure hate is a strong enough word. But I know why. When a child gets used to hearing yes all of his life he doesn’t like to hear the word no.”
Kim continued: “He is not stepping foot in this house ever again, he’s dead to me.”
During the middle of their row, Kim received a phone call from the police who explained that Jamie had been involved in a serious car crash.
An upset Gabby turned to Kim saying: “Please tell me he’s going to be all right.”
Later on in the episode, Gabby follows Kim to the scene of the crash and she starts to panic as she cannot see his car.
Kim tells the police at the scene: “If you can’t tell us, we need to speak to someone who can right now. Where is he? Tell me what you are doing to find him. So get more police here, get everyone here.”
A tearful Gabby then pleads with police officers to continue searching for Jamie, but when a marine investigation unit arrives at the scene she worries he is dead at the bottom of the lake.
“He’s not in there, he can’t be,” she screams at a police officer dealing with the investigation.
Jamie’s car is later pulled from the lake, but there is no sign of him inside the vehicle.
So could Jamie have escaped ahead of the police arriving at the scene in a bid to leave Emmerdale without Gabby?
After all, it’s a Tate family tradition for deaths to be faked.
Kim herself had her car pulled up and a wrong body identified long ago before she returned to finish off ex-husband Frank.
Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) appeared to die when Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) smashed his head on a rock – only to emerge later on that he was actually alive.
Kim faked her own death again when she worked with Will Taylor (Dean Andrews) to staged being zipped into a bodybag after Jamie was caught poisoning her.
Perhaps Jamie has taken a leaf out of his mother’s book and faked his own death to get away from his many enemies in Emmerdale.
Or could his mother have forced Jamie to fake his death so she can hurt Gabby and make sure he never returns to the village?
Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV 1.
