Empire is coming to a close after there was a lot of drama behind the scenes. That’s because Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal, claimed he was attacked. Police then investigated and claimed he made a false report.
Smollett was written off the show for its final season. That doesn’t give a lot of hope for his return despite the cast rooting for him. However, Vivica A. Fox might have hinted that plans could change. Here is what she said and more to know.
Jussie Smollett was written off of ‘Empire’
Smollett was accused of making a false police report after claiming he was attacked. It was then decided that his character wouldn’t appear in the last season of Empire. Showrunner Brett Mahoney talked to TV Line about how this would be handled.
“Jamal is taking a sabbatical from the family,” Mahoney revealed. “He doesn’t want to be caught up in Lyon family drama, which is very much in keeping with his point of view last season — that [the family business] should be something that the family moves away from.”
This was after multiple cast members released an open letter calling for Smollett to be kept on the show. Some actors have talked about the decision to write him out since then.
Terrence Howard said it wasn’t cool that the show hasn’t mentioned him
Some of the cast members are still defending Smollett’s part in the show. Terrence Howard gave his opinion on The Late Late Show with James Corden.
“I mean the show kicked off because I took my 4-year-old son and put him in the trash can because he had worn high heel shoes down on the stairs,” said Howard. “I was so proud of that young man that played my son because he still loved me at the end of it. And all he wanted to do was get closer to me.”
He then talked about the fallout from Smollett’s legal problems. “And then, out of nowhere, you know, he’s snatched away from us,” said the star. “So it’s like now he was the heart of our show and now it’s like our show is on a heart and lung bypass machine.”
Howard then talked about how the show approached getting rid of Jamal. “That was my little boy and he’s gone now and they don’t mention him as if it’s OK,” he said. “And it’s, like, no. That’s not cool.”
Vivica A. Fox said ‘Ya’ll may see him’
It seems like Smollett’s character is gone for good. However, Vivica A. Fox seems to be giving some hope for Jamal’s return.
She talked about still being in touch with Smollet on Watch What Happens Live. “I love him,” she said. “And who knows? Don’t count him out. Y’all may see him.” Host, Andy Cohen asked, “On Empire?” She didn’t vocally respond but fluttered her eyelashes.
Fox was also asked if she agreed with the decision to write him off Empire. “That was tough,” she answered. “He’s family. He’s always gonna be family. Love him to death, but there was just too much drama surrounding the circumstances.”
It sounds like the cast misses working with Smollett. Fans will have to wait and see if he will actually appear again this season.
