Two-time Academy Award-winner Zhao has a lot on her shoulders, at the moment. Not only is she introducing a collection of new characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe later this year, but she is also welcoming some of the most powerful heroes into the mythos as well in Eternals.
Zhao recently explained how she looks at Eternals as a “tribute” to some of the biggest heroes in the world – specifically those from DC Comics.
She explained: “I think I definitely take a lot of responsibility for that, because anything happens in this film is a tribute to characters we love, films we love.
“And so our Batman, Superman, these characters are incredible. And I think we’re here in the business of telling story of myth.” (Via The Playlist)
She then likened her main character, Ikaris (played by Richard Madden) to the Man of Steel himself: Superman.
Zhao went on: “Superman, all the comics, and every brilliant filmmaker that had brought Superman to life is playing ancient mythology with a modern twist, their own version of that mythology.
“And Ikaris in a way is, is our take on it. But that’s doesn’t mean we can’t pay tribute and have a good time with the ones that are so iconic.”
The film seems like it will be wearing the comparison between Ikaris and Superman on its sleeve, as revealed in a new clip released by Disney.
The video clip goes through each of the heroes and describes what they are like as people.

Madden explains that Ikaris is the “loyal soldier” in the Eternals.
A clip from the movie shows a young boy mistaking Ikaris for Superman.
The main points for this comparison are that he flies and shoots lasers from his eyes.

Zhao later described Ikaris as someone who is always a “watcher on the wall”.
She said: “He’s incapable of relating to humanity unless he’s with Sersi.
“He misses seeing the world through her eyes because he’s floating while her hand is on the ground, not grounded enough to be human.”
This depth of the characters prompted Madden to say Eternals is “above just another superhero movie”. (Via GQ Magazine)
Madden went on: “It’s about: ‘Okay, so how do they interact with the world now, when they’ve done everything?
“‘What are these people like? And what do they value and care about? What doesn’t affect them?”
He added: “We’ve done that classic thing, so it’s now about how do we make it more interesting? I’m hoping we have done that with Eternals. The Marvel Universe keeps changing and elevating and growing and I really think we’re doing something that they’ve not done yet.”
Eternals hits cinemas on November 5.
