In many ways, becoming a Food Network cooking show host seems like the best job in the world. Who wouldn’t want to prepare and sample gourmet food all day long, plus get paid for it? But for anyone hoping to score that sort of job, maintaining their weight might prove tricky.
Everyday Italian host Giada De Laurentiis has a slim figure even though she spends all day cooking and sampling hearty recipes, which often include generous portions of starch-heavy pasta. How does De Laurentiis stay so thin with a diet like that? Apparently, it’s all thanks to a spit bucket she always keeps on set.
Giada De Laurentiis never wanted to be in showbiz
Hollywood careers ran in De Laurentiis’ family, but that doesn’t mean she always dreamed of breaking into the industry. The cookbook author began her culinary career studying at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Paris with the intention of becoming a pastry chef. She went on to work for several high-profile gourmet restaurants, including Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in Los Angeles.
Everyday Italian premiered on the Food Network in 2003. At first, fans thought De Laurentiis was a model or actress who didn’t really know how to cook. But she quickly proved them all wrong thanks to her incredible talent and effervescent personality.
The ‘Everyday Italian’ chef doesn’t swallow the food she prepares
All of DeLaurentiis’ fans watch her bite into the savory, calorie-filled creations she creates. Which leads to the next logical question: is the Food Network host’s metabolism that high, or is there some other trick that keeps her from gaining weight?
The answer is that she keeps a spit bucket nearby. In 2014, Page Six reported that De Laurentiis “never” swallows any bite of food on set. An unnamed source told the publication, “When Giada films her cooking show, she never eats. Never. When she is making drinks and food that she has to drink or eat, they have a dump bucket that is brought out the second they cut.”
The source took it one step further, saying, “Sometimes when they are shooting her taking bites out of food like cake, they have an assistant take the bite (so you only see teeth and a mouth), and then they cut back to her taking an empty fork out of her mouth to resume filming.”
A rep for Giada De Laurentiis denied the claim, partially
As for the mouth and teeth body doubles, a rep for the Food Network star called the allegations “absurd and completely false.” However, the spokesperson did admit that De Laurentiis doesn’t chew and swallow all the carb-heavy pasta she whips up during cooking segments, Pop Sugar reported.
The rep said:
“[De Laurentiis] absolutely eats her own food while filming. Giada tapes sometimes three episodes in one day, and they do multiple takes on a close-up of her eating. She doesn’t always eat and swallow every time, since they can do sometimes six to 10 takes with three episodes a day, and that would be like eating six to eight meals a day . . . The bottom line is, she most certainly does eat the food she prepares on the show, but does not always consume the whole dish, as that would be too much for most people to eat in one day.”
