Gemma Atkinson to return to Hollyoaks as iconic character Lisa Hunter after 15 years

Gemma Atkinson is set to return to Hollyoaks as her iconic character Lisa Hunter.

The former Emmerdale star, 36, left the hit Channel 4 soap in 2006 after first joining in 2001.

It comes after Sarah Jayne Dunn was axed from the soap opera last week for refusing to delete her OnlyFans account.

Gemma is now set to reprise her role of Lisa for a special guest appearance where her shock return from the past leads to "dramatic scenes" with pal Zara Morgan.

Teasing what fans can expect, Hollyoaks revealed that since leaving Chester, Lisa has found love with her activist boyfriend in Thailand, which is where she connected with old school friend Zara.

But is there an ulterior motive behind her surprise visit?

Talking about her return, Gemma said: "I’m thrilled to be popping back to Hollyoaks for a short time. It’s where my career began so of course, I was going to say yes!

"The cast and crew are so wonderful and although we have stayed in touch personally, it’ll be great to work together again professionally."

Since she left Hollyoaks in 2006, Gemma has appeared on the likes of I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Casualty as Tamzin Bayle and Emmerdale as Carly Hope.

In 2017, Gemma appeared on series 15 of Strictly Come Dancing where she sweetly met pro dancer and now fiancé Gorka Marquez. They have since welcomed daughter Mia, two.

During her time on Hollyoaks as Lisa, Gemma was part of several hard-hitting plots with one including a bullying and self-harming storyline.

The actress has previously spoke about her desires to return to the Channel 4 soap as Lisa.

Gemma said at the time: "I'd love to go back for a few episodes, but I don't know how they would introduce Lisa back."

It comes after Kelly Condron returned to Hollyoaks over the summer to reprise her role of Zara Morgan, who left the soap in 2005 after first joining in 1999.

Hollyoaks continues on weeknights at 6:30pm on Channel 4 and 7pm on E4.
