Stars and fans are still coming up with theories on what could happen next for the characters of Gilmore Girls. A new one is Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and Luke Danes (Scott Patterson) could raise Rory Gilmore’s (Alexis Bledel) baby, but here are a few reasons why that shouldn’t happen.
Scott Patterson thinks Lorelai and Luke can raise Rory’s baby
Fans still don’t know what will be next for Rory. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life left off with her telling her mother she’s pregnant, and Lorelai is rightfully shocked.
It’s unconfirmed who the father is, and there are multiple possibilities. Patterson threw out an idea of Lorelai and Luke raising the baby for her.
“If it’s Logan (Matt Czuchry) or whatever, then, you know, he flips out and goes away,” he said on his I Am All In podcast. “History repeats itself a la Christopher (David Sutcliffe) and Lorelai.”
He continues, “And then she goes off to pursue a huge opportunity in Europe for her writing and dumps the baby in our lap. And we get to raise the kid a little bit while she’s off pursuing that and she comes back.”
Patterson also thinks this would leave room for fans to learn more about Luke by introducing his family. “I mean you could get Meryl Streep to come in and play my mom,” the actor said.
This is certainly one way the show could go. But there are a few reasons why Lorelai and Luke shouldn’t do this.
Why Lorelai and Luke shouldn’t raise Rory’s baby
Gilmore Girls has mostly focused on the relationship between grandmother, mother, and daughter. This idea would certainly break away from the premise of the show and would feel very different.
Rory watched her mother struggle to grow up and raise her. Lorelai found a way to find a dream and realize it by building and owning the Dragonfly Inn. It would be a huge turn for the show if Rory decided she had to choose between full-time parenthood and pursuing a career, especially when she’s not a teenager but a woman who already has a degree from Yale.
The good thing about this possible storyline is that Lorelai and Luke would have a chance to raise a baby. Lorelai considered having a kid, but Luke wasn’t totally on board in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. They moved on, and in the end, they got married.
Some fans would certainly be excited to see the couple be parents. But in the end, the couple seemed to be happy with the life they already had together.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life might have left fans with questions. But one clear thing was the Gilmore family was repeating history. The idea of Luke and Lorelai “raising” Rory’s baby for her, even temporarily, would go against that, given Lorelai ran away from her parents to avoid that very thing.
