Inside Kate Garraway’s transformation from ITV News star to nation’s sweetheart

Telly icon Kate Garraway has been on our screens for almost three decades.

When she's not discussing the latest headlines on Good Morning Britain she's entertaining millions of fans on the airwaves on Smooth radio.

In recent years, Kate, who turned 54 on Tuesday, has taken part in Strictly Come Dancing as well as the gruelling I'm a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!, where she won over millions of new fans.

The mother of two has had a heartbreaking 14 months after her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised after contracting coronavirus in March 2020.

She's spoken candidly about her personal turmoil in bid to help others, which has seen Kate become a national treasure.

Daily Star has taken a look back at the beloved GMB star's glistening career to mark her impressive career.

A breakfast telly star is born

Kate started out her career in the spotlight in 1989 at the age of 22.

She worked at the South edition of the ITV News Central on ITV Central as a reporter and news presenter.

The broadcaster later became talent spotted by a boss who viewed her presenting on the news channel, which saw her become a co-presenter of the South East edition of the ITV News Meridian.

In 1998, Kate joined Sunrise on Sky News with Martin Stanford.

Kate went on to work on GMTV in 2000, where she worked alongside Andrew Castle, Eamonn Holmes and John Stapleton.

When GMTV changed to Daybreak, she became the entertainment editor for the breakfast show.

She later replaced Christine Lampard as the main presenter for a short period of time, before Lorraine Kelly took over the role.

Now Daybreak has been taken over by Good Morning Britain, Kate co-presents the show twice a week.

Topless encounter with Ben Shephard

Kate's close friend and GMB co-star Ben Shephard recently let slip a secret about the moment he accidentally saw her semi-naked.

The pair used to live very close to each other, and would often go round each other's houses for a cup of tea and a catch up while working on breakfast TV together.

He spoke about the experience on the ITV show last year, revealing it came about when he cycled over to her house, where he realised he could see her walking around her basement from above.

Tipping Point host Ben said: "I'd invited myself over for a cup of tea like I often did as she wasn't usually keen as she had to tidy up.

"Kate had obviously gone home and had a sleep. Suddenly someone nude walked into the kitchen and I looked up and it was Kate. And she was topless. I kind of stopped. I was transfixed."

Ben, 46, revealed how mortified he was at the time, saying he did not want to move in case she looked up and saw him, as he was too embarrassed to explain.

Strictly bombshell

When she's not presenting Good Morning Britain, the media personality is busy hosting Mid Mornings with Kate Garraway on Smooth Radio.

Her broadcasting career began with BBC Radio Oxford, and she had become an Independent Television News trainee journalist by 1994.

Kate swapped the DJ decks from the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom in 2007 as she took part in the fifth series of the BBC competition.

She was partnered with professional dancer Anton du Beke and the pair finished in eighth place, despite receiving the lowest core from the judges in every week but one.

Strictly fans adored Kate and she was repeatedly saved by the public vote, prior to her elimination in week seven.

Jungle fever

Kate took part in the nineteenth series of I'm A Celebrity.. Get Me Out of Here! back in 2019.

During her time in the Australian jungle, she impressed fans with her determination during the gruelling Bushtucker trials, as well as her shower scenes wearing a busty red bikini.

She narrowly missed out on a place in the final. – which was eventually won by EastEnders star Jacqueline Jossa.

In her exit interview, Kate said she was "flabbergasted" to have got so far.

"It was amazing" she said. "There was so much love in the camp… I've learnt so much."

She also revealed that she has spent years turning down the ITV reality show but when she was asked this time round, she said it was "now or never".

GMB nightmare

It happens to the best of us but Kate overslept on her first day back at Good Morning Britain after her stint on I'm A Celeb.

The TV presenter feared for her Good Morning Britain job after missing her big return to the show after landing from Australia.

She managed to sleep through her call time, forcing pal Ranvir Singh to step in for her.

Appearing on the show via a video call, she told Ben and Ranvir: "Listen, I’m going to get fired! "I can’t believe I’ve done this!

Family heartache

Kate was married to her former boss at ITV Meridian Ian Rumsey from 1998 until 2002.

In September 2005, the TV presenter married former Labour lobbyist Derek Draper in Camden, London.

The couple share two children Darcey, 14 and 11-year-old Billy.

Derek was diagnosed with coronavirus in March 2020 and remained in a critical condition in hospital for a year.

Kate previously stated that her husband may never recover and could have no quality of life due to the numerous medical complications as a result of Covid-19

He returned home on a trial basis in April 2021 to the delight of Kate and their children.

Derek, 53, receives 24-hour care and Kate released a book on April 29 entitled The Power Of Hope, which details her husband's health battle.
