A close friend of the former rugby player has revealed Mike Tindall’s main reason for heading into the jungle this year is for the hefty cash payout. His pal and podcast co-host Alex Pain has claimed since the pandemic, the rugby champion has been “faced with hard times” admitting he might not be “as well off as” as people might assume.
The 42-year-old, who hosts The Good, The Bad and The Rugby podcast alongside Mike, confessed his “primary source of income is speaking to the public”.
He explained: “He’s on the sporting circuit, but it’s worth remembering that the last two years there haven’t been pretty much a days work for people in that sort of industry.”
Despite being married to royal Zara Tindall, daughter of Princess Anne, the former World Cup Champion entered the jungle for the huge £265K payout.
Alex told The Sun: “It’s not like he’s sitting there on a pile of money.
“He’s a guy who’s in the public eye and that’s where he earns his money.”
Alex added he does not believe Mike would have accepted ITV’s offer if it were to “jeopardise” his relationship with the Royal Family.
The podcast host admitted: “He wouldn’t be doing it if it was a problem, I know that much.”
He went on to explain Mike would never do anything to “create any sort of scenario in which he would be getting it wrong”.
While Alex has found his pal amusing to watch, he admits Mike seems to be struggling with jungle life.
He admitted: “I think he’s been quite bored at times actually.”
While Mike’s renditions of Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice and Boom! Shake The Room by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince kept fellow campmates entertained earlier in the series, Alex believes he might need to step further out of his comfort zone to keep winning the public’s vote.
He added: “He may have to rap again in a week or two to invigorate the vote.”
Mike has been keeping viewers surprised during his stint in the jungle, particularly when he donned a tiny pair of Speedos.
“I think there’s probably an opportunity for him if he wants to move into the world of budgie smuggler modelling,” Alex joked.
As of Tuesday morning, Mike is one of three frontrunners to take the jungle crown.
Owen Warner has odds of 5/4 to win, with Jill Scott priced at 6/4 and Mike at 8/1.
BetVictor’s spokesperson Sam Boswell explained who they think the most likely winner is.
“It’s the final week of I’m a Celeb as the final is on Sunday!” they said.
“So far, we have had Charlene and Scarlette voted out by the public.
“Owen Warner is our new favourite at 5/4, he’s been a bit of a dark horse in the competition as he started the series at 12/1. He’s a likeable character in the camp; he’s witty, charismatic and could go all the way to win.”
“Jill Scott, who’s dominated the market throughout the series, sits close behind at 6/4. Hopefully football fans will be behind the Lioness this week and not be too distracted. She’s done really well in the jungle and put her everything in each trial she’s faced.
“Other possible contenders include Mike Tindall comes in at 8/1, Matt Hancock 10/1, and Seann Walsh 14/1.”
I’m A Celeb continues tonight at 9pm on ITV One.
