The phrase ‘end of an era’ is perhaps used all too often these days, but it’s an incredibly fitting one to describe next week’s Coronation Street, as legend and stalwart Norris Cole (Malcom Hebden) dies.
No, you’re crying.
The above clip, taken from Wednesday’s (September 15) edition of the ITV soap, sees Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox), Ken Barlow (William Roache) and Mary Taylor (Patti Claire) rush to the hospital.
Prior to this, the soap icons received word that Norris has collapsed and suffered a stroke.
Upon arriving at the doors of the hospital, they are met by an emotional Freda Burgess (Ali Briggs).
‘Where is he, love?’ asks Rita, while Ken asks what ward Norris is in.
Freda holds back tears, struggling to find the right words.
‘Norris passed away just a short while ago,’ she says, leaving Rita, Ken and Mary utterly speechless.
Okay, we might be crying now.
Before to his hospitalisation, Norris had wanted to speak to Ken and Rita, as he had some important news to share.
Will the legends ever find out what it was that their old pal wanted to tell them?
As news of Norris’ passing spreads around the cobbles, emotional scenes will see the residents of Weatherfield toast to him in the Rovers.
Coronation Street airs these scenes Wednesday September 15 at 7:30pm on ITV.
