Diana Gabaldon’s sweeping Outlander series will return to screens once again at the start of 2022. Ahead of its long awaited return on Starz and Amazon Prime Video, Jamie Fraser himself, Scottish star Sam Heughan, revealed what he’s been getting up to now filming has come to an end.

Sam Heughan has revealed he finds it difficult to unwind after coming to the end of a new season of Outlander.

The historical drama has been filming in Scotland this year after production was halted in the wake of the first COVID lockdown.

Season six is now in its post-production phase in time for an early 2022 premiere.

Although Heughan, 41, won’t be needed on set for the confirmed season seven for some time, it still takes him a while to get out of Outlander mode.

The Scottish actor recently appeared on Alex Zane’s podcast Just the Facts to preview the upcoming episodes.

‘“It really is a sort of transitional moment,” Heughan said of finishing a shoot.

“It’s sometimes hard to switch off, and for the first few days after shooting and completing a season of Outlander you’re still on this hamster wheel of getting things done and doing things.”

Heughan stars alongside Irish actress Caitríona Balfe as time-travelling nurse Claire Fraser, who is transported to 18th Century Scotland at the start of the series.

Based on Diana Gabaldon’s ongoing series of epic novels, season six will pick up from where we last left the Frasers in their new home in America.

The actor admitted it took him some time to realise his time as Jamie Fraser had come to an end for the time being.

He explained: “I came to London to have a bunch of meetings and various things going on, and suddenly it’s just dawned on me, you know, I’m like, ‘I’m done’.”

Of course, Heughan will be wanted back on set in due course when the Starz production begins work on season seven.

Unfortunately, the epic drama is notorious for its lengthy breaks between seasons, dubbed ‘Droughtlander’ by fans.

Therefore, Sam Heughan and the rest of the cast may not be returning to the Scotland location until well into 2022.

Thanks to COVID restrictions, Heughan and co. only had to shoot the equivalent of just over half a season this time round.

It is, to be fair, the shortest season we’ve done,” he revealed. “It’s only eight eps.

“But it was potentially one of the hardest, because we were shooting during a pandemic. There were just a lot of factors involved that made it pretty difficult to shoot.”

Thankfully, there won’t be any shortage of Outlander content going forward, as the confirmed seventh season will feature a whopping 16 episodes.

Meanwhile, the actor has been enjoying his newfound freedom after restrictions in England were completely lifted in July.

He told Alex: “So I’ve been celebrating, I’ve been enjoying being amongst people again.”

No specific release date for season six has been confirmed, but Outlander fans will certainly have cause to celebrate when the show returns at some point next year.

Outlander season 6 will premiere in early 2022 on Starz. Seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
