Outlander: What happened between Frank and Brianna?

Season five of Outlander was pushed back by US network Starz with the forthcoming series premiering in February 2020. The new series will be based on two of Diana Gabaldon’s novels The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The show will see Brianna Fraser (played by Sophie Skelton) and her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) struggling to live in the past with the revolutionary war is on the horizon.

After Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) came back through the stones, she reunited with Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) and the pair decided to give their marriage another go.

The couple raised Brianna as they own and never told her the truth of what happened until after Frank’s death.

In the novels, Brianna would go to Frank’s office at Harvard University after school while her mother was studying medicine.

They had a close bond and he even taught her how to shoot, regularly taking her to a rifle range to train.

However, Brianna always sensed there were things amiss between her parents.

Through a series of flashbacks in the fourth outing, fans got a deeper insight into their relationship.

Frank loved Brianna and cared for her as if she was his biological daughter, which spurred her to pursue a love of history.

In season four, viewers saw the pair having some exchanges before his death and in one of them Frank discovered Claire wasn’t lying about travelling through time.

Frank also discovered Claire’s obituary but Brianna didn’t pick up on it as she spoke to her father in his study.

Brianna knew there was much discord but couldn’t find the words to talk about.

Reflecting on the evolution of her character, Skelton told the FYC Panel in June: “Well, for Brianna, when we first saw her, she’s a very difficult character to understand.

“She’s really struggling with something, we don’t quite know what yet.

“It’s only in season four we find out in the flashbacks with Frank that in fact she feels responsible for her father’s death, that she was very aware that her parents weren’t getting on in 20 years of marriage and how that affected her.”

“Also, then struggling with the fact that her mother’s a time traveller, it’s not a conventional situation. So that was a really fun thing for me to be able to play.

“Pre-Frank’s death, 16-year-old Bree where she’s a lot lighter and she’s very young and bubbly.

“Then post his death, things become a little bit darker and she becomes a lot more guarded.

“Then throughout season four, Bree decides to go back in time to warn her parents and then goes through a horrific event and it really makes Brianna grow into the woman that she is going into season five and how she deals with that.”

Skelton’s words suggest there was so much going on beneath the surface which remained unsaid between father and daughter.

The actress also said to Vanity Fair last year about Brianna’s decision to travel back through time after Frank’s death.

She said: “I know a lot of people want a quick fix and a sort of reunion between Jamie and Brianna.

“But I think people have to remember that Frank really did raise Bree and he did a very good job.

“There’s that guilt she feels going back. She feels like she’s betraying him.”

The novels mention Frank, so Brianna is likely to have more flashbacks to Frank in the show in the future.

Audiences are likely to see more of the dynamics between the two.

On top of this, Brianna is still getting used to Jamie (Sam Heughan) being her father and she will always be comparing the two in her mind.
