Jacob (played by Peter Mullan) and Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) were the Ozarks’ resident drug king and queenpins before Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) arrived on the scene. Netflix viewers watched the pair inflict their sociopathic and controlling processes all around them from the off, whether it be manipulating local law enforcement or taking advantage of pastor Mason Young (Michael Mosley). However, it’s this exploitation of the holy man which has left some fans slightly baffled.
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Ozark.
Pastor Mason Young was a loyal servant of God who’d spread the word of Jesus Christ via his sermons which took place on the lake of the Ozarks.
His followers would join Mason on the water to hear him preach – all the while attending with an ulterior motive.
The Snells had hijacked Mason’s sermons to distribute and sell their drugs, a fact unbeknownst to the man of God.
So when the Snells discovered Marty had offered Mason a place to preach on land – as part of his own manipulative plot – they took deadly action.
The Snells warned Marty they would take action against Mason if he were to move onto the land and effectively ruin their distribution operation, but the pastor didn’t listen.
As a result, the Snells ended up killing his pregnant wife Grace (Bethany Anne Lind) but spared their son Zeke, leaving Mason to bring hm up alone.
However, some fans have pointed out that the Snells perhaps shouldn’t have been so precious about dealing on the water and that they just as well could’ve distibuted on land.
After all, they certainly seem to have a hold over local Sheriff, John Nix (Robert C Treveiler).
Taking to Reddit, Ozark fan popomannn92837 raised the issue as they stated: “I wonder about Snells’ reasoning for throwing a tantrum when Marty ‘ruined’ his distribution service.
“He was so mad because apparently it is only safe to sell drugs on a lake and nowhere else, for example his farm? Or the woods? No, according to him, he could easily get caught when that happens.
“But in the episode before when the dead body was found by Marty and his wife, the sheriff was suspicious of Marty and wanted to do a proper investigation,
“But then somehow changed his mind and made clear to Marty’s wife Wendy that he changed his mind for an obscure reason, so to me it appeared as if Mr Snell has some form of power over the sheriff.”

They weren’t done there, however, as they added: “Also in the next episode Mr Snell wanted to gut the priest’s wife in broad daylight to teach Marty a lesson?!
“Wtf? He thinks he can’t get away with dealing drugs but gutting an upstanding citizen is okay? Lol, is this all bad writing or do I miss something?” (sic)
It certainly does raise some question marks as the Snells’ drug dealing was just one of a number of crimes they would commit on land.
And the fan’s plot hole garnered plenty of support among the Ozark fandom.
Agreeing with the error, one fan replied: “This always bothered me too. The Snells have power and the local cops obviously know they’re into heroin.. The boats on the water thing seemed a tad overcooked.”
While a second suggested: “The Snells have something on the Sheriff, I don’t think they ever specifically say what, but he ‘owes them a debt’.
“I believe they came to an agreement that the Snells won’t distribute on land and the Sheriff won’t arrest them basically.”
Ozark is available to stream on Netflix now.
