The Sex and the City reboot is officially happening. It is happening without Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, much to the chagrin of fans. While And Just Like That won’t have Samantha Jones, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The reboot’s showrunners have opened up about their plans, and they have assured fans, Samantha won’t be killed off, at least not right now.
Kim Cattrall opted out of appearing in the Sex and the City reboot
Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis are all signed on to reprise their roles in And Just Like That. There is no word on whether Chris Noth will return. David Einenberg, who portrayed Steve Brady for all six seasons of the show, has stated that he is unsure if his current role in Chicago Fire will allow him to return to the series. Willie Garson, who portrayed Carrie Bradshaw’s best friend, Stanford Blatch has not spoken openly about whether he’ll reprise his part.
One thing is for certain, Kim Cattrall will not return. Cattrall’s open feud with Parker has made headlines several times over the years. Cattrall has claimed she outgrew the role, but fans largely believe she’s stepped away because she refuses to work with Parker again.
And Just Like That will approach Samantha’s absence in a pretty vague way
Ever since news broke that Cattrall would not be returning for the Sex and the City reboot, fans have questioned how they would explain the absence. Fans were fearful that the writing team would kill the character off to deal with her absence from the project. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
TV Line caught up with HBO Max chief content officer, Casey Bloys. Bloys, who is directly linked to the Sex and the City project, suggested that “friendships fade” when asked about the exclusion of Jones. While the explanation is vague, fans are taking it to mean that Samantha will have just distanced herself from the group. The explanation would make sense. After all, when the curtain dropped on Sex and the City 2, Samantha was the only unwed member of the group. It’s likely that her priorities, in her 60s, would be different than the priorities of her pals.
Could Samantha return eventually?
Fans hoping that Samantha could eventually return could see the decision not to kill off the character as a good sign. Still, would Cattrall ever return to the show? Most likely not. As it stands now, Cattrall has made a firm decision regarding her future involvement in the series. She no longer wishes to be associated with the franchise. She actively suggested another actor should take her place.
And Just Like That is also not currently set for more than one season. HBO Max announced the reboot as a limited series, meaning the ten-episodes that are set to start production in the Spring will most likely be the only episodes fans get to see. The plot has been largely kept under wraps, although Parker has told fans that the series will deal with the Coronavirus pandemic head-on.
