We’d like to hope that soap’s longest running character Ken Barlow (William Roache) is indestructable. But Coronation Street is set to worry the stalwart’s family – and the fans – when the character is hospitalised with pneumonia.
Ken recently headed to Scotland with Claudia Colby (Rula Lenska) in search of Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard), who has taken time away from the Street with Bertie in the wake of the tragic death of his wife Sinead.
The couple are forced to return home after the search bears no fruit but Peter (Chris Gascoyne) soon realises that Daniel is actually nowhere near Scotland. At the end of this week, he manages to track Daniel down and the pair have an honest heart to heart while out for a brisk hillside walk.
Daniel has made the decision not to come home for Sinead’s funeral but Peter makes it clear that he could regret this for the rest of his life. As Peter manages to convince Daniel to come home, Daniel will pay touching tribute to his soulmate and mother of his child in a eulogy.
He will later have a more private moment at her graveside as he breaks down in tears, clearly struggling with his grief. But he isn’t the only one who is struggling as Ken’s recent trip to Scotland has left him feeling ill.
As he takes a turn for the worse, he ends up being admitted to hospital with pneumonia and Peter realises that it could be serious. But as Peter warns Daniel that Ken isn’t in a good way, will Daniel be able to be there for his dad?
While we’re pretty positive that it will take more than this to kill off Ken – this is the guy who was walloped down a staircase with a book and was home before long – his health turn might prove to be a wake up call for his loved ones.
