Strictly Come Dancing returns for the semi-final this weekend and there is no room for errors. The quarter-final saw two of the remaining contestants make mistakes, which led to questions about the scoring. Professional dancer Gary Edwards spoke to Express.co.uk about how the judges on the BBC show have fared this year.

Strictly fans have found the 2021 series more controversial than ever as they have disagreed with some of the scores.

In particular, BBC Breakfast star Dan Walker was named one of Shirley Ballas’ “favourites” as he received a few nines for his performances.

Viewers have been taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the scoring this season, and they have not been overly impressed.

Erin said after the quarter-final: “That scoring was absolutely horrific, PLEASE vote for John and Johannes tonight.”

Siobhan said: “I’m sorry but scoring Dan 8 and 9 for that tango is A JOKE!!”

Professional dancer and judge Gary Edwards agreed that the scoring has been questionable this year.

The Dancing With The Stars expert called for Bruno Tonioli to return from the US and rejoin the panel for the next season.

He said: “I know Bruno inside out on Strictly and I still think for Strictly Bruno is the ideal judge.

“I think you need Craig [Revel Horwood] like you need Len [Goodman].

“Whether people think Anton [Du Beke] is the new Len… I do think Anton is close.”

He added: “Shirley is better suited to Dancing With The Stars, but the public seem to like her.

“On the scoring, I don’t really agree with her. I hope Bruno does come back, they need to keep a diverse panel.

“It’s whether Bruno will replace Anton. Anton gave some excellent critiques on ballroom and he is a ballroom expert.

“He disagreed with the judges and he was right. The good thing is they have a great pool of judges to choose from.

“For me, it needs Bruno. The original setup had the banter. This year it’s a little bit forced.

“With Bruno, what you see is what you get and I for one hope he comes back.”

Recent reports have suggested Strictly bosses are “split” over whether to keep Anton or bring Bruno back.

Anton, who was formerly a professional dancer on the show, joined the judges after Bruno was forced to give up his role due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, a source said: “The BBC are in a real quandary here. Anton has been so loved and such a pro, so it seems wrong to get rid of him.

“It seems disloyal, but then it was Bruno’s job.”

There is some good news as Bruno will be back for the 2022 live tour, and he cannot wait.

The tour will be hosted by former Strictly pro, Janette Manrara, with Craig and Shirley set to join Bruno as judges.

Craig recently suggested there could be five judges on the panel next year, so both Bruno and Anton can take part.

The BBC is yet to comment on who will be kept as a judge for the 2022 series.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One tonight at 7.05pm.
