Vikings plot hole: Bjorn Ironside blunder exposed as fans spot key detail

When the epic History series was last on screens, King of Kattegat Bjorn Ironside (played by Alexander Ludwig) had just been dealt a fatal blow. However, one Vikings fan may have uncovered a major continuity mistake involving the new protagonist.

Bjorn was first introduced to Vikings fans way back in season one, played by Irish child actor Nathan O’Toole.

He is the son of the series’ original leads for the show Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick).

Tragically his parents have both been killed over the course of the series, so the young king has been left to fend for himself.

Alexander has been praised as a more than worthwhile successor to star Travis, who has since gone on to appear in films such as Warcraft and will lead HBO’s new sci-fi drama Raised by Wolves.

Like his fictional father, Bjorn solidifies the family resemblance with piercing blue eyes.

However, despite this striking physical trait, one fan has taken to IMDb to highlight a surprising biological inconsistency in the historical show.

They said: “When Bjorn is a child, his eyes are brown. As an adult, they are blue.”

A quick Google search will yield that Nathan O’Toole does indeed have brown eyes, and no efforts were made to alter either Nathan or Alexander’s eye colour.

It’s a lesser known fact that many babies are originally born with blue eyes but later change to a different colour.

But it’s very uncommon for the same phenomenon to happen the other way around.

As Alexander doesn’t appear as Bjorn until season two, it’s likely that casting directors for the show weren’t anticipating someone with blue eyes being cast as the older version of the character.

Moreover, with Alexander now in the role, his blue eyes now make more sense considering his parentage.

Information is a little inconsistent, but Travis would frequently wear blue contact lenses to accentuate his eye colour, possibly as a visual shorthand to symbolise his relationship with Norse god Odin.

Eye colour is a tricky detail to get right, and sometimes it isn’t worth putting child actors through the hassle of contact lenses to please the more observant fans.

For example, in the Harry Potter series, producers attempted to change Daniel Radcliffe’s eye colour to better match the book description of green eyes, like his mother Lily.

Sadly, Daniel suffered an allergic reaction during production of the first film, and this effect had to be abandoned.

Thankfully, Alexander’s blue eyes are striking enough that no enhancement is needed to draw a visual connection with his slain father.

Fans are nervous to discover the fate of Bjorn in the last half of the final season, as he has been left bleeding on a beach after being stabbed by Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen).

Whatever the outcome, viewers should expect a cataclysmic final showdown for the historical epic series.

Vikings season 6 airs on History on Wednesdays and on Thursday on Amazon Prime.
