Michael Hirst recently explained his reasons for bringing back Vikings favourite Floki (played by Gustaf Skarsgård) in the final instalment of History’s epic series.
The crazed boat builder, and old friend of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) finally made himself known in America in the second half of season six.
Despite seemingly being killed near the end of season five, Floki capped off the series with a tender moment after reuniting with Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) and Torvi (Georgia Hirst).
Floki last appeared being crushed under an erupting volcano in Iceland, but returned as a ‘crazy man’ who arrived in the New World some time before Ubbe and Torvi.

Although Floki’s fate was always left ambiguous, Hirst was initially reluctant to either confirm or deny whether he would eventually return to the show.
Now fans have binged through the final ten episodes of Vikings, however, the showrunner and historian is finally ready to unpack his reasoning behind bringing back one of the series’ most popular characters.
Speaking to ET Online, he explained: “I knew that I couldn’t leave him just neglected and forgotten in the bottom of a volcano.
“That wasn’t the way that Floki was going to leave the show or leave life, indeed, because he was the spirit of life.”
Before his apparent departure, Floki appeared to be smothered under what he believed to be Helgrind, the entrance to the Norse version of Hell.
However, Ubbe and Torvi’s expedition to Iceland in season six spurred on rumours that he survived the accident and would be making his return before the series finale.
While most Vikings fans couldn’t have predicted Floki would turn up in America, his reappearance didn’t come as a surprise for those who have been keeping up with the theories and speculation.
Hirst continued: “I think I came fairly early to the conclusion that he would reappear in America, and then it was a question of what kind of shape he’d be in, who would he be?”

“Would he be still the old Floki or would he have changed? After all, he’s suffered a lot. He’s been through a lot of extreme circumstances.”
Floki may have been absent throughout the first half of the series, but he ended up playing an instrumental part in Vikings’ epic conclusion.
Several other characters met their demise this time round, including fierce rivals Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) and Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen).
However, Floki was able to bring the series full circle by reminiscing with Ubbe about his friendship with Ragnar in Vikings’ touching final scene.
The showrunner added: “I knew that Ubbe would reconnect with him, and I knew that the audience would love that, because I loved it.
“I felt that I’d done justice to all the characters, including Floki, by bringing him back in that way.”
While it’s unknown if any characters will make their return, the historical action series will continue with the upcoming Netflix spin-off, Vikings: Valhalla.
