Gavin and Stacey fans have been left waiting for two years for another instalment of the beloved British sitcom. The 2019 Christmas special was a huge success, quickly becoming the most-watched scripted TV episode of the 2010s within a week of its launch. As such, it would be no surprise to find out the BBC is planning another comeback, yet fans might be in for a disappointment.
Will there be a Gavin and Stacey Christmas special in 2021?
Gavin and Stacey is by far one of the BBC’s most popular sitcoms, so it will be no surprise that there are countless fans waiting for a continuation.
This is only aiding by 2019’s Christmas Special, which closed on a major cliffhanger, leaving viewers begging for answers.
Over 17 million people sat down on Christmas Day night to watch the 2019 special, and since there wasn’t a continuation in 2020, many are expecting this year to finally deliver.
Sadly, there will not be a special this year, with the BBC not announcing Gavin and Stacey as part of its holiday season line-up of specials.
To make matters worse, there are currently no plans for the show to receive a continuation at all.
The BBC nor showrunners have confirmed plans to bring the Shipman family back again anytime soon.
However, considering the last special’s immense success, it seems inevitable that the cast will come back together to answer fans’ burning questions.
It seems as though an announcement for the next special could be a sudden one, with Stacey star Joanna Page comparing it to the origins of the 2019 special.
In an interview with the Mirror, Page said: “None of the rest of the cast ever expected we would do another special. We didn’t have a clue.
“After the third series ended we were told, ‘This is it, there won’t be any more’ so it was such a complete shock.
“I’d expect if it was ever going to be on TV again that getting another phone call out of the blue is what would happen.”
Gavin and Stacey first premiered back in 2007 and has only grown in popularity ever since.
Will fans receive an answer to 2019’s cliffhanger?
One of the main reasons fans are looking forward to another continuation is to finally receive closure on that infamous cliffhanger.
At the end of the 2019 Christmas special, Nessa (played by Nessa Jenkins) proposed to Smithy (James Corden), but before he gave his answer, the screen cut to black.
Ever since fans have been desperate to know whether or not Smithy said yes and Corden himself addressed the ambiguous end earlier this year.
Speaking to Alison Hammond on This Morning, Corden said: “Really, it’s just about finding the time to do it and finding out if we think it’s good enough.
“Nobody wants a last episode that doesn’t deliver, so we’ve just got to sort of let the tank fill up again really.
“I hope so much that we get to do one. I think it would be strange to leave it where we left it.”
However, Alison Steadman, who plays Pam Shipman, threw doubt on the idea of another episode back in February.
In a separate interview on This Morning, Steadman explained: “I would doubt it, only because James Corden is in America, he’s such a big star now and Ruth Jones is so busy writing novels.”
Gavin and Stacey is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Britbox.
