Yellowstone season four will be arriving on The Paramount Network on November 7 and it has been a long time coming. To keep fans in the loop, the network released a new trailer that depicts the ultimate power struggle. Viewers are now split between whether patriarch John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) will live or die.
Will John Dutton die in Yellowstone season 4?
The new trailer for season four of Yellowstone shows Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) make a chilling observation.
He is heard saying: “One leader falls, another rises,” which is the quote the official Instagram account for the show used alongside the video.
The now-familiar warning that “every body pays” then appears on screen, as carnage breaks out.
At the end of the video, a body is seen being dragged along the ground and a familiar voice saying: “We’re at war, you and me” is heard once more.
Fans took to the comments on the Instagram video in fear that John is the leader Rainwater was talking about.
Sabrina_hayes72 said: “Wait? What?!! Who fell? No way John Dutton is going out like that.”
The comment sparked a discussion amongst other viewers, with countrystrong_girl responding: “Don’t worry, he’ll make it.”
Mz_murf added: “He’s too tough to die!” Countrystrong_girl then replied: “What would happen to the show if they killed off the main character? Would you honestly keep watching?”
Nunimom quoted the phrase from the trailer, saying: “One leader falls, and another one rises?! Say it isn’t so.”
There are some viewers who have debated boycotting the rest of the series if John Dutton dies.
Sabrina_hayes72 continued: “Don’t get me wrong, I love John too. His death would change the whole dynamic of the show.
“I might make it past his death, but I wouldn’t like it. Same with all of the characters, really. It’s like they were made to work together. Amazing cast.”
At this moment in time, the character’s fate remains unknown but he is likely to feature in at least some of the fourth season.
Back in December 2020, Costner alluded to the fact his character may not survive until the very end.
He spoke to ET Canada about whether he was able to return to the filming set for season four.
He said: “I can’t say. There’s an ending that you’re gonna see, hopefully it’s a powerful one for you.
“I try to make things and be a part of things that have a dramatic arc to them. Just try to enjoy it right up to the end if you can.”
Following the comments, fans are still confident he will appear in some form or another in the new season.
In September 2021, the Kevin Costner Modern West Instagram account shared the latest trailer.
Costner said: “I don’t know if you’re ready for this one.”
With this in mind, it seems big things will definitely be happening in the new season, and some fan-favourite characters could be lost.
At the end of season three, John was approached by a group of men in a van and they shot him and left him for dead.
The first of the season four trailers shows ranch hand Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) finding John badly wounded at the roadside.
He is heard saying: “John, don’t die on me now, not like this, you hear me?”
Fans will have to wait for the first double-bill episode to find out John’s ultimate fate.
Yellowstone season 4 will air on The Paramount Network from November 7.
