An 83-year-old man has been charged after allegedly touching a teenager in an "inappropriate area" at a shopping centre in Sydney's north-west.

The man is set to face court on Tuesday after allegedly sexually touching the 19-year-old woman at Top Ryde City Shopping Centre on October 21.

The woman was unknown to him.

Police commenced an investigation after speaking to the teenager and arrested the man at a home in North Ryde on Monday morning.

He was taken to Ryde police station and charged with sexually touching another person without consent.

He was refused bail and will appear at Burwood Local Court.
