A British couple’s holiday row ended in tragedy when Reece Pegram, 22, fell over a hundred feet from a Turkish hotel balcony onto a concrete patio.

Now Reece’s girlfriend, Mary Meyers Kayley, is in court charged with his murder.

Kayley, 31, was said to be extremely drunk on the night of March 12 this year and the couple had been refused service in the hotel bar.

Prosecutors told a court in Manavgat, Turkey, that the couple had rowed furiously before Reece’s death.

Denying murder, Kayley alleged that Reece “wanted to commit suicide because he had psychological problems”.

She explained a quantity of blood found in the five-star hotel’s bed and bathroom was the result of a cut on her thumb.

Kayley claimed she went to the bathroom following a blazing row with Reece, but when she reemerged, her boyfriend was no longer there.

She said she then went to bed, and was asleep when police arrived to tell her that her boyfriend had fallen from the balcony.

Kayley said: “When I got out of the shower, I saw the person laughing evilly to himself on the balcony and said he wanted to commit suicide, I blocked him. Meanwhile, the blood on my right thumb spattered the floor and walls of the room”.

But Turkish prosecutors say that the couple had argued because Reece had been unfaithful to Kayley, and that she had pushed him over the balcony.

Kayley had initially told police they had argued about Reece’s infidelity before later claiming that they had argued about his drug use.

She also claimed Reece was a drug dealer back in the UK in an apparent attempt to discredit him.

Kayley told the court: “Reece is one of the important drug dealers in England. He asked if there was any place to buy drugs here”.

Traces of cocaine were found in Reece’s body during the post-mortem examination.

Scottish-born Kayley tried to get her initial statement to police thrown out on the grounds that the interpreter she had been provided with “didn’t understand her accent”.

However, her appeal was rejected after it was pointed out that she was using the same interpreter at the hearing.

Prosecutors allege that Kayley killed her boyfriend out of jealousy and are requesting a life sentence, which in Turkey means a minimum of 24 years.

It is unclear when the second hearing will take place.

Friends of Reece’s family raised over £10,000 on GoFundMe to fly the father of one’s birthday back to Newcastle, and a funeral was held on May 9.
