Inmates were briefly evacuated when a fire broke out at the Manhattan Detention Complex, the city jail also known as “The Tombs” on Friday night, officials said.
One Department of Corrections officer suffered from smoke inhalation after a garbage fire broke erupted in an old cell on the ninth floor of the prison at around 8:34 p.m., sources told The Post.
Two Corrections buses were filled with inmates pulled from the city jail in lower Manhattan as the Fire Department worked to place the blaze under control a little over an hour later, at 9:45 p.m.
The 12-story complex currently holds 648 inmates.
