Life won’t return to normal until 80% of people have had vaccine, expert warns

Life may not return to normal this year, an expert has warned as the world battles against the deadly coronavirus.

Professor Sarah Palmer, who is co-director of the Centre for Virus Research at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research and Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at The University of Sydney School of Medicine, says 80% of the population will need to be vaccinated before normality returns.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday that so far, 1.5 million Brits have had their first dose of the vaccine already as he announced plans to ramp up vaccinations to deliver hundreds of thousands of jabs daily by next week.

But according to Dr Palmer's warning, at least 53 million people will have to have had the vaccine before we see life return to normal.

"Even if people are vaccinated and they receive booth boosters, we have no idea how long the immunity in some of these vaccines will last," Dr Palmer told Daily Mail Australia.

She added that even once vaccinated, people could still spread the deadly virus.

Dr Palmer added: "[The vaccines] may be making an infection less difficult.

"But they may not be preventing infection.

"So it could mean that you are still infected and could still spread the disease to others even if you're vaccinated."

"It will take time. And I think to be honest, we won't have everyone vaccinated until the end of 2021 into 2022," Dr Palmer cautioned.

"So it really requires 80% of the population to be vaccinated to protect the whole society."
