A man has been shot and killed near a party celebrating the election of President-elect Joe Biden in Seattle.

Reports have suggested the victim was a 31-year-old who was struck by a bullet on the corner of 10th Street and Pike in the Washington State city.

The shooting was first reported just after 1am as celebrations across America carried on into the night.

American journalist Andy Ngo shared footage from the immediate aftermath of the shooting on Sunday.

Uploading scenes of police tape and medics seemingly treating the victim at the scene, he wrote on Twitter: "Someone got shot during the Biden celebration street party in Seattle."

Three hours later, reports began to emerge that the shooting victim had been killed – with police launching a murder investigation.

The Seattle Police Department said in a statement on Sunday: "Shortly after 1:00 AM, Seattle Police responded to reports of a shooting at that location.

"Upon arrival, officers located the male victim and began life-saving measures until the Seattle Fire Department took over primary care.

"The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center but later succumbed to his injuries."

Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reports that the incident took place at 1:08am on Sunday morning.

The outlet reports that a suspect was spotted running away from the scene of the crime – with police then stopping a vehicle near the streets Broadway and Union.

The report adds: "The search for the suspect was still underway following the stop and multiple people were detained.

"According to East Precinct radio, a suspect was identified but it is not clear if that person was taken into custody."
