Meghan Markle's royal wave was 'very similar' to Princess Diana's, and the former Suits actress used it 'to bond instantly with public', a body language expert has said.
The Duchess of Sussex moved to the UK to be with her then-boyfriend Prince Harry in 2017.
As an actress Meghan had attended her fair share of red carpet events but her new royal engagements were on a larger scale than the TV actress, who lived in Canada, had previously experienced.
A body language expert analysed Meghan's first appearances in the UK, particularly one element of her body language arsenal, the royal wave, Daily Express reports.
Judi James said her wave was an "important signal."
The future Duchess of Sussex used hers to connect with her new public.
"Meghan’s wave was an important signal when she first joined the Royal Family," Judi said.
"As a successful US actress and campaigner, there were some worries that she might appear a little too grand for the Royal Family or their fans.
"People remembered when Princess Michael married into the royal family and earned the nickname 'Princess Pushy' for her very regal ways and body language."
However, the expert claimed these concerns were combated with help from Meghan's body language.
Judi said: "Meghan used this very sweet, cute and tentative wave to bond instantly with the public, though."
Judi suggested Meghan's look helped the public to like her.
She said: "Her hand was held low and her facial expression included raised brows and a rather pursed-lip smile as though she was requesting to be liked rather than demanding."
Queen won't 'slam door' on Prince Harry over fears of 'devastating consequences'
In fact, the expert compared Meghan's first appearances to the late Princess Diana.
Judi added: "Her wave technique, with the eye-check to camera, was very similar to the kind of greeting Princess Diana used to do with the press and public, as though sharing thoughts and recognition in a very powerful type of tie-sign."
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced on January 8 last year that they would step back from senior positions within the Firm following talks at Sandringham with Prince Charles, Prince William and the Queen.
Meghan and Harry have since relocated with their son Archie Harrison to California, having spent the intervening period living in Canada, in hopes of a more private lifestyle.
