Welcome to our live coverage

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Melbourne’s next stage in its reopening from coronavirus restrictions.

I’m Cassandra Morgan and I’ll be with you through tonight as we cover the return to shops, gyms, the regions and more.

Here’s a quick refresher of what restrictions will ease across the city at 6pm:

  • Travel will be allowed between metropolitan Melbourne and the regions;
  • Masks will no longer be required outdoors, but they will still be mandatory inside;
  • All retail shops are opening with a density limit of one person for every four square metres. At this stage, customers don’t have to be fully vaccinated – that rule kicks in when we reach our 90 per cent vaccination target;
  • Gyms can also open with a density limit of one person for every four square metres;
  • Restaurants, pubs and cafes will no longer have caps on the number of patrons they can host indoors. Instead, they’ll just have to stick to the one fully vaccinated person for every four square metres limit;
  • Theatres and cinemas can reopen with the density limit of one person every four square metres, with up to 1000 showgoers;
  • Outdoor venues like stadiums and zoos can host up to 5000 people;
  • Weddings, funerals and religious services return for fully vaccinated people, at one person per four square metres indoors and 500 people outdoors;
  • Melburnians are allowed up to 10 visitors to their homes per day, and up to 30 people can gather outdoors.

If you’re after more detail, we’ve got a story on the new eased restrictions here.
