A police officer has been left with life-changing injuries after fireworks were launched at him at an illegal gathering.
The incident took place as the officers were called to disperse the illegal gathering on Vine Street, Gorton in Manchester on Bonfire Night (November 5).
Video widely shared on social media has captured the shocking moment the group fire the pyrotechnics on the street where an officer is heading back towards the van.
A woman can be heard yelling: "Leave us alone!" One of the rockets then explodes next to the police van.
It is not clear in the video when the officer was hit, but a firework exploded on impact with his head.
The clip ends as he gets back to the van before driving off.
Despite not initially requiring medical treatment, the officer was later found to have suffered life-changing injuries to his ear, according to Manchester Evening News.
Greater Manchester Police has since launched an investigation and arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of section 18 assault – an offence causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The suspect remains in custody for questioning.
Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: "This was an outrageous attack on our officers which has left one of them with life-changing injuries. We are doing all we can to support him at this time as he continues with his recovery.
"It is shocking to yet again see fireworks effectively being used as a weapon. The injuries caused to my officer will have a significant impact on him for some time to come and potentially for life. Officers doing their job in protecting the public should not be subject to attacks like this."
Mr Hopkins warned that fireworks should only be used at organised events in a safe and controlled environment.
"An investigation is underway, and while we have made an arrest in connection with this incident, our detectives are still pursuing several lines of enquiry to ensure that those responsible for this are brought to justice," he added.
