The Queen and Prince Philip reportedly feared that their grandson Prince William would "go off the rails" after the death of his mother Princess Diana, according to a close royal source.

The new documentary featured Martin Palmer, a close friend of Philip, claiming the royal couple were worried that the young prince would not be able to handle the loss of his mother.

Martin said that it was of particular concern to the Firm because William would one day have to lead the Royal Family as King.

The ITV programme, 'Philip: Prince, Husband, Father', was made in honour of the Duke of Edinburgh, who died at the age of 99 earlier this year.

In the show, rare archive footage showed Prince Philip secretly comforting his grandson Prince William as he walked behind his mother Princess Diana's coffin at her funeral.

The 1997 clip shows the moment teenage William is reassured by his granddad – but only when he thought the cameras could not see him.

Martin Palmer said the clip showed a grandfather who "is trying to help his young, very vulnerable grandson struggle through this awful, awful moment."

Mr Palmer said of the clip: "There's a moment where they go under the Horse Guards Parade arch where it's quite clear that Prince Philip – and I asked him about this he said, 'Yes, I didn't think the cameras could see us' – at that point he turns to William, who he is walking beside and comforts him.

"He knew what it was like to be a member of a dysfunctional family and he did his damnedest to make sure that did not happen to his grandchildren."

Prince Harry, who was only a young man at the time, has since gone on to talk about the harrowing experience of the funeral and said no child should be made to walk behind their mother's coffin.

Rare archive footage as well as audio recordings of Philip talking about his role as prince, husband and father was used in the insightful documentary.
