President Trump vented anger Saturday over news that investigators in special counsel Robert Mueller’s office wiped their official phones of data — and slammed them as a “hit squad” that was out to get him.
“ALERT: So now we find out that the entire Mueller ‘hit squad’ illegally wiped their phones clean just prior to the investigation of them,” Trump tweeted.
He heaped scorn on the “really dumb” excuses that members of Mueller’s team rolled out to explain why more than two dozen cell phones they used during the two-year investigation of Trump-Russia collusion allegations were rendered useless before the Justice Department’s inspector general could check them.
Mueller deputy Andrew Weissman said he entered the wrong passcode too many times, “accidentally” wiping his device, Fox News reported. Other investigators claimed that their phones reset themselves.
“Just like Crooked Hillary [Clinton] smashing her phones with a hammer, & DELETING HER EMAILS!” Trump scoffed.
Senate Republicans have asked DOJ inspector general Michael Horowitz to investigate the data destruction and hand over internal documents from Mueller’s investigation, Politico reported.
Trump rolled out another anti-Clinton grievance Saturday, with a tweet about his longstanding complaint that the former FBI director who oversaw the investigation into his campaign had benefited from monetary support from Clinton allies.
“Was Andy McCabe ever forced to pay back the $700,000 illegally given to him and his wife, for his wife’s political campaign … Just askin’?” he wrote.
